No. 9,780.4 Patented June 14. '185'3 N. PETERS. Phuxe-Lilbogmphn washington, D. C
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
S. S. JEWETT AND E. H. ROOT, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
STOVE.
Speccation of Letters Patent No. 9,780, dated June 14, 1853*; Antedated December 14, 1852.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, SHERMAN S. JEwETT and F. H. ROOT, of Buifalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stoves, which is also applicable to grates; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents an elevation of the front of our improved sliding door stove, and Fig. 2 represents a horizontal section of the same at the line a' ai of Fig. l.
Our invention and improvement consists in constructing stoves or grates, with recesses adjacent to their doors, such recesses being insulated from the fire and flues, of sufficient size only to receive the doors, and open only where the doors enter, and with doors adapted to being moved at will into the recesses, in such manner, that the sooty and unsightly inner surface of the doors and of the space behind the open doors, are equally concealed whether the door be open or shut.
In the accompanying drawing, which represents one of the applications of our invention to a stove A is the front plate of the stove, the jambs (Z) o) of which are hollow, or contain recesses (c c) open only at their inner edges to admit lnd conceal the doors which close the openings in the front plate. These in this example are constructed in four leaves (d, cZ, e, c) which slide in grooves z',) formed in the bottom plate (B). These four leaves are arranged in pairs; the two leaves of each pair overlap each others edges as shown in section at F ig. 2, and their adjacent edges are flanged as at g, so that when the outer leaf is pulled out of the recess in the jamb, it shall draw out the inner leaf. The outer leaf of each pair is tted with a knob (it) by means of which the doors can readily be drawn out or shoved into the recess. When the leaves are moved into the recesses to open the doorway, or front of the stove, they are completely concealed from view, while their position is such that they can be readily and conveniently drawn forth whenever it is desired to close the door again.
The arrangement of doors we have described above, may be varied to suit the views of dierent constructors, without deviating from the principles of our invention. Thus in some cases it may be expedient to hang the doors by their upper edges upon ways or slides, instead of constructing them to slide upon their lower edges. It may also in some cases be advisable to divide each half of the door into a number of narrow leaves, and to arrange them to slide into a curved recess, a portion of which is formed in the sides of the stove adjacent to that in which the door is placed.
By this arrangement not only is the sooty and unsightly inner surface of the doors and of the space behind the doors when open, concealed from view, but the annoyance is also avoided which results from sliding a sooty smoking door to the outside of a stove, instead of into a recess, and the rush of smoke and ashes into a room whenever a hinged stove door is suddenly opened. The door is also prevented from disseminating the smoke and dust on its back into the room.
IVe do not claim the furnace or lire place of a stove or grate, nor merely making the door which closes the front thereof to open and close by sliding, whether the same slides horizontally or vertically, nor making it slide on a ledge on the outside of the stove, nor into and out of the lues, but
What we do claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination in a stove or grate, of the fire place or furnace, with a` sliding door or doors to close the front of the fire place, and a recess in one or both of the jambs of the replace for the door or doors to slide into and be concealed from View on the outside, and insulated from the re and smoke within, this recess being a separate compartment open only where the door enters and only of sufficient capacity to receive the same, substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names.
SHERMAN S. JEWETT. FRANCIS H. ROOT.
