To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWARD C. FOWLER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Forestville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Nail-Pullers, of which the followingis a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a full-length View of the ,com plete device. Fig. 2 is an end viewa View of the end carrying the bit. Fig. 3 is a full-length view of a sectional part of the device comprising a single nail-notch. Fig. 4 is a view of the part shown in Fig. 3, turned a quarterway around.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter a, denotes the handle. Its upper end is shaped, formed, and adapted to receive and sustain longitudinally-directed blows, andits sides in whole or in part approximate the flat rather thanthe cylindrical in form, to the end that they may thereby be adapted to receive and sustain laterally-directed blows.

The letter 1) denotes an edged part or bit attached to the handle. \Vhen shaped as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, it is annular in form.

Each letter 0 denotes a nail-notch, by which is meant a notch formed in the bit and adapted to straddle a nail in the act of pulling it. Each nail-notch is in the same general alinement with an aforesaid flattened space upon the side of the handle.

On looking at the bit, as shown in Fig. 2, it will be seen that the parts or sections of the edge which are next a notch and upon either side thereof and lying in a plane at substantially right angles to the axis of the shaft converge to the notch on lines which are parts of a circle, the center of which circle substantially coincides with the axis of the handle.

An annular bit affords space and place for nail-notches of different sizes, all in a similar relation to the handle. The annular part of the device has an opening or openings rearward of the nail-notches'adapted to alford a View of the contact of a nail-notch with a nail in the act of nail-pulling.

In the use of the device the operator holds it in one hand and a hammer in the other. He places the bit in slanting contact with the wood in such position as to eventually bring a nail-notch astride the body of the nail to be pulled. Then by driving upon the end of the handle the bit is made to enter the Wood so as to underlie the head of the nail. Then by striking downward on the side of the handle he pries the nail outward from itsseat in the wood.

I claim as my invention-- 1. The handle formed and adapted to there receive and sustain longitudinally-directed driving-blows and also havinga flattened side and therebyadapted to there receive and sustain laterally-directed pryingblows, in combination with a bit containing a nail-notch located in general alinement with said flattened side of the handle and having on either side of the notch sections of the edge located in a plane substantially at right angles to the axis of the handle and converging to the notch on lines which are parts of a circle the center of which circle substantially coincides with the axis of the handle, all substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.

The combination of the handle with the annular bit having nail-notches formed there in and also having an opening rearward of the nail-notches adapted to afford a View through such opening of the contact of a nailnotch with a nail, in the act of nail-pulling, all substantially as described and for the pur: poses set forth.
