To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN STEWART SWAN, Jr., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mount Vernon, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have inve'nted a new and Improved Tack-Puller, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to tack pullers used in connection with tool handles, and in all analogous relations where it can be used for pulling tacks, my special purpose being to mount the tack puller upon such a portion of a handle as will render the tack puller efiective for many purposes, and will at the same time strengthen the handle.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation, showing a glaziers tool equipped with my improved tack puller and showing the latter in the act of pulling a tack; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the glaziers tool resting upon its side and provided with the tack puller; and Fig. 3 is a detail showing the blank from which the tack puller is formed.

A glaziers tool is shown at 4 and is provided with a neck 5 and with a rib 6, these parts preferably being integral, as will be understood from Fig. 1. Handle plates 7 are disposed upon opposite sides of the rib 6, these parts together constituting the framework of a handle which is provided with depressions 8, 9. A blank 10 is provided wth diamond-shaped openings 11, three in number, and is bent and sunken into the handle framework, being secured thereto by aid of a single rivet 12 passing entirely through the blank and through the handle.

Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, it will be noted that the openings 11 are favorably disposed for the purpose of pulling tacks, and that the edges of the openings may be forced under the head of the tack and caused to withdraw the tack from a surface into which it is sticking, as indicated at 13 in Fig. 1. The blank 10 is not quite flat but is curved slightly so that when placed in position, as indicated in Fig. 2, it will fit neatly so as to leave no projecting edges. The blank being in position, it presents essentially a middle portion of substantially oval form covering the end of the handle, and two diamond-shaped pieces 14: integral with the central portion, each of the three portions being provided centrally with a diamondshaped opening 11. Each diamond-shaped opening 11 has a beveled edge 11 which, when the band is in position, affords a sharp surface for grasping the head of the tack.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. As an article of manufacture, a handle provided with a depression, a metallic band bent substantially into U-shape and fitted upon the end of said handle, said band having an opening in registry with said depression in said handle, and a rivet extending centrally through said handle and connecting together the ends of said band.

2. The combination of a tool provided with. a rib and with handle plates disposed upon opposite sides of said rib, said handle plates and said ribs together constituting a handle, said handle being provided with a depression and a substantially U-shaped band mounted upon said handle and provided with an opening registering with said depression, and a rivet extending through the ends of said band and through said handle plates and said rib.
