UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. LIPPOLI), OF CUMBERLAND, MARYLAND.
CLOTH ES-WRINGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,453, dated August 17, 1897.
Application filed January 28, 1897. $erial No 621,066. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. LIPPOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cumberland, in the county of Allegany and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Olothes-Wringers, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to that type of clothes- Wringers in which the clothes are twisted by a revolving shaft having suitable means for holding the clothing at one end or portion, the other end or portion being held either by the hand of the operator or by suitable mechanical means. v
It is the purpose of my present invention to provide a clothes-wringer of this type which shall be capable of operation either by power or manually, as circumstances may require, and to so construct and organize the several parts of the mechanism that it shall possess.
great simplicity and durability and be manufactured at very low cost.
It is a further purpose of my invention to provide a wringer of the type mentioned'which can be operated by steam, electric power, or otherwise, which shall accomplish its functions rapidly and thoroughly, and shall provide an efficient safeguard against the removal or breaking of buttons.
My lnvention consists, to these ends, in the novel features of construction and new combinationsof parts hereinafter fully explained,
and then particularly pointed out and defined 1n the claim which concludes this specification.
For the purposes of the following description reference will be had to Figure 1 is a view in end elevation, showing part of the frame of a wringer constructed according to my invention and mounted upon the edge of a tub or sink. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, the part upon which the Wringer is mounted being in vertical section.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral lindicates the frame of the wringer, consisting of a flat base 4:, adapted to rest upon the edge of a tub, sink, or the like and forked or bifurcated on its under side, as shown, to straddle said edge, anclattached thereto by a set-screw 5, which is'screwed through one side of the forked base and provided with a foot 6, which presses against one side of the tub. Projecting fromtheupper side of the base 4 are two parallel arms or brackets 2.
the accompany-' Near the upper ends of the brackets 2 I provide suitable openings or bearings for a wringer-shaft which projects beyond the outer faces of both the brackets 2 2..
Fixed on the wringer-shaft outside the brackets 2 are collars 8, which prevent any longitudinal movement of the shaft, and fixed on the end of the shaft is a crank-arm or handle 9, by means of which the wringer may be operated by hand.
The other end of the wringer-shaft, which projects overthe tub or sink, is formed into or provided with a hook 10, of suitable dimensions to receive such a mass of saturated clothing as canbe wrung out by a single operation of "the machine. Between the brackets 2 2 I mount two pulleys upon the wringer-shaft 7, one of said pulleys, as 12,
being loose on the shaft and the other pulley, 13, fast. A single belt 14 connects said pulleys with any suitable power mechanism, a suitable belt-shifter 15 being provided to throw the belt upon the fast pulley or from the latter to the loose pulley. I may operate the shaft 7 by any preferred power-such, for example, as steam, by an electric motor or manually, the crank 9 being provided for this latter purpose.
The invention comprises very few parts, is of the utmost simplicity, and is durable un-' perends of said arms and curved at one end to forma hook, a crank-arm fixed on the 0p- .posite end of the wringer-shaft and a fast and loose pulley mounted on the said shaft between said upright arms, substantially as shown and described and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM A. LIPPOLD.
