Description
V. CORDER.
Improvement in Washing-Machines.
Patented July 16,1872.
PATENT OFFICE.
VINCENT CORDER, OF SHELBYVILLE, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Speoication forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,533, dated July i6, 1872.
' Specification describing a certain Improvement in Washing-Machines, invented by VIN- CENT CORDER, residing at Shelbyville, in the county of Shelby and State of Missouri.
The nature of this invention consists in the combination, with one or more beaters operated by suitable mechanism to cleanse the clothes in an ordinary wash-tub by pounding them, of a platform which supports the washtub, and is intermittingly rotated so as t0 subject successively all parts of the clothes to the action of the beaters.
Figure l is a plan view of a washing-machine embodying the principle of this invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation thereof.
The same letters of reference are used in both figures in the designation of identical parts.
In the example illustrated in the annexed drawing, two beaters, A and B, are used, attached to the arms ofla walking-beam, C, which oscillates on a fulcrum, o, upon a standard of the frame-Work. The walking-beam is connected by the rod D2 with the Wrist-pin of the crank D1 on the driving-shaft D, which may be operated by a winch or other preferred means. The clothes and suds are placed in an ordinary wash-tub, E, beneath the beaters, the tub being supported upon a platform, F, which is fastened to a short spindle, F1, resting in a step on the base timbers of the framework. The platform is held steady by means of anti-friction rollers F2 placed under it at several points near its periphery, and, being constructed with a serrated rim, f, receives an intermittent rotary motion by means of the pawl G, which is attached to an arm, H2, on the oscillating spindle H, another arm, H1, of which is connected by the rod I with the crank D3 of the driving-shaft D.
The weight of the clothes and suds will ordinarily hold the wash-tub stationary upon the platform; but if found necessary to fasten it down, ordinary clamping devices may be provided for that purpose.
What is claimed as this invention, and desired to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the movable wash-tub, platform F f, pawl Gr, shaft H H1 H2, connecting-rod I, cranked driving-shaft D, rod D2,
walking-beam C, and pounders A B, substanf tially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed myname to this specilication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
VINCENT GORDER.
