Description

UNITEDA STATES PATENT GEEICE.
A JOSEPH VARNEY, OF BATAVIA, ILLDTOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern:`
Be it known that'I, J osEPE VARNEY, of Batavia, in the county of Kane and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain Vnew and useful Improvements 1n Washing-Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description thereof, reference being l had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a washin g-machine,
`as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a side View, part in section and Fig. 2, a plan view of my machine.
A represents a box of any suitable dimensions, provided with a concave bottom, as shown in Fig. l. In the sides of the box A the journals of a roller, B, havetheir bearings. This roller smoetagon-shaped and corrugated longitudinally l on all sides, and 1s turned by means of a crank,
C, on one of the journals. rlhe sides of the roller B being iiat is a great advantage over the usual round corrugated roller, as thereby flat rests are provided for the clothes while they are being rubbed. The clothesare rubbed by a corrugated wash-board, I), against the roller B. This washboard is connected by a spring, E, with ablock,
G, which is pivoted in the forked end of a lever, II, said lever being pivoted to a standard, I, at-
tached to the end of the box A. The other end of the lever H is, by a pitman, J, connected with a wrist-pin upon the side of a iiy-wheel, K. On the iiy-wheel shaft is a pulley, a, connected by a belt, '11, with a Wheel, L, underneath, and a pitman, M, upon a wrist-pin on the side of said wheel or pulley L connects with a crank, d, on a horizontal shaft under the box, said shaft being at one end provided with a treadle, N, to be operated by both feet. By this means the required,
reciprocating motion is imparted ,to the washboard D, the spring E pressing it down upon the Octagon roller.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the octagon longitudinally-corrugated roller B, the reciprocating corrugated wash-board D, and the spring E, said spring connecting the wash-board with the operatingm echanism and pressing it against the roller, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination ofthe box A, Octagon roller B, crank C, wash-board D, spring E, block G, lever H, pitmen J M, ily-wheel K, pulley a L, belt b", crank d, and treadle N, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have
