This roller extends crosswise of the oscillatory frame, so that the oscillations of the latter cause the roll to be tilted from end to end. The roll is at .the same time reciprocated or oscillated longitudinally of the shoe-sole by the vibratory motion of the carrier 6 on the frame d, which is effected by connections between the carrierand the single driving-shaft, as I will now explain. It will be seen that with the arrangement described the rocking of the jack will cause the sole on the last to be subjected throughout its length to the action of the levelingroll, while the tilting of the roll distributes its action throughout the width of the sole and that the roll is being rocked on the pivot of its carrier at the same time.
Yielding pressure of the leveling-roll on the sole is applied by means of a treadle h through the following connections: Rods h are fastened at their upper ends to the arms d, respectively, and at their lower ends extend through a cross-head h, below which they carry nuts h and springs it between the cross-head and said nuts. The cross-head has a socket at the middle, which is engaged by a partly-spherical block or washer if, and the treadle is connected with said washer by a rod h.
It will be observed that by the construction above described auniversal joint is provided be varied Without departing from the spirit' and scope of the invention.
It will be observed that the arm 0 and rod 0 and their operating devices constitute mechanism operating automatically to change the relative longitudinal position of the roll and jack, and that the roll-carrier, pivoted at 1 and its pitman d constitute connections for changing the relative lateral inclination of the roll and jack, said connections being separate from the mechanism for changing the relative longitudinal position thereof.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y 1. A sole-leveling machine combining in its structure the following elements, to wit: a rocking jack, a pivoted roll-frame or holder, a vibratory roll-carrier pivotally mounted on the roll-frame or holder and carrying a leveling roll which is tilted by the rocking motion of the roll-frame or holder, a single powershaft, and independent mechanismsall driven by said power-shaft and respectively in operative connection with the said jack, the vibratory roll-carrier, and the roll-frame or holder, for automatically and continuously vibrating the roll-carrier and rocking the jack and rollframe or holder, substantially as described.
2. A sole-leveling machine combining in its structure the following elements, to wit: a jack which rocks in one direction only, a pivotal roll-frame or holder extending over the jack and adapted to rock in a vertical plane and to rise and fall, a vibratory roll-carrier pivoted to the roll-frame or holder, a levelingroll mounted on the pivoted roll-carrier, a single power-shaft, and three independent mechanisms driven by the power-shaft and respectively in operative connection with the rollframe or holder, the pivoted vibratory rollcarrier, and the jack, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a jack which rocks in one direction only, a vertically swinging and rocking roll-frame having a jointed connection with a journal provided with a crank, a reciprocating leveling-roll mounted on the roll-frame, a single drive-shaft, a pitman connected with the crank on the journal of the rocking-frame and actuated by connections with the said drive-shaft for automatically rocking the roll-frame, a swinging-lever havinga pitman and eccentric connection with the drive-shaft for reciprocating the levelingroll, a crank on the axis of the rocking-jack, and connections between the said drive-shaft and the crank on the axis of the jack, substantially as described.
