Description

UNITED STATES PATErleQlFIcu.
THOMAS V. BROWN, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
lMPROVEMENi'I IN GRlNDSTONE-JOURNAL BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,768, dated October 1G, 1866.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. BROWN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have made a new and useful Improvement in Grindstonc-Journal Boxes; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following speeication, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a top view, Fig. 2 a side elevation, Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, and Fig. et an end view, of a journal-box as provided with my invention.
The said box, ou which my improvement rests, contains two friction-rollers, on the periphery of which the grindstone-journal rests and revolves.
It is very important to protect both the circumfercnces and the journals of these frictionrollers from water and sand or grit thrown oft' by the grindstone while in use, otherwise the rollers and their journals, as well as the journal ofthe grindstone, would soon become worn or seriously injured.
In the drawings, A is the box, in which the two friction-wheels B B are arranged in manner as represented, their journals being supported in bearings a a a. a cast or formed on the sides of the box. To this box a cover, O, 1s hinged at one end, as shown at b. It extends over the peripheries ot' the wheels and down their ends, and with the sides of the box is formed to embrace the grindstone-journal or nearly touch it. The cover O is also formed or cast with four curved ears or caps, c o c c, extending from it over the wheel-jour nals and their bearings, and also down partially over the ends of such journals in manner as shown in Fig. 2. By so extending down upon the ends of the journals the caps c c cc operate as Scrapers to remove therefrom any sand or grit which may accumulate thereon and be likely to get into thejournal-bearings, and they also protect the bearings to better advantage than were they merely carried over them.
The cover O at its fore end has two ears or projections, d d, extending from it and between the two sides of the box, and so as to go underneath the bent arms ot' aduplex 'so as to extend over and about the wheel-journals, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. rlhe arrangement and application of the duplex spring-catch E with the projections d d from the cover O, and with the sides of the box A, as specied.
