Description
L. BRAUER.
' cAn-AXLE Box.
Patente@ Nov. 23,1875. I"
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
LOUIS BRAUER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-AXLE BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,338, dated November 423, 1875; application filed January 8, 1875.
To all whom 'it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS BRAUER, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in J ournal-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, suficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this speciiication, in which- Figure l is a front view of the interior of the device embodying my invention. A Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts inthe two figures.
My invention consists in a frame secured Within the box and interposed between the journal and the axis of the wheel inv the box, It also consists in the wheel with a rotary axial pin and side depressions, iu combination with a frame interposed between the journal and the axial pin, and having bearings set in the depressions.
Referring to the drawings, Arepresents the journal, and B the box thereof. Within the box there is suspended from the journal A a rotating ring or band, O, whose inner face at the part that is uppermost rests ou the journal. D represents a wheel, which is arranged within the ring C, so as to be in contact with the inner face of the latter at the lowermost point thereof. The wheel D has its axle-pinE formed solid with the body thereof, and the sides of the wheel are cut away, or formed with spaces or depressions F. The bearings ofthe axis of the wheel are brasses or boxes G, which are located in a frame, H, arranged within the box B, and bolted thereto without interfering with the motions ofthe band C. The frame H and brasses G occupy positions in the depressions F, so that they project but slightly, it' any, beyond the sides of the wheel, and thus utilize space without decreasing the serviceable length of the axis E of the wheel.
It will be seen that the axis E formed with the wheel, and rotating therewith, is strong and durable, and able to stand the great strain transmitted from the journal. This construction also allows the use of brasses or removable boxes for the axis E.
The bearings, instead of being aframe bolted to the box B, may be passed through the sides of the box.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of axle-box, lubricatingwheel band, and supporting-frame, interposed between the journal A and axis of the wheel D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The wheel D, with rotary axial pin E and side depressions F, in combination with the' frame H, interposed between the journal A and the axial pin E, and with bearings set in the depressions F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
LOUIS BRAUER.
