The main lamp c is preferably contained in the rear portion of the casing, boing shown icrcin ae provided with the socket c, having the customary circuit-terminals adapted to bc connected in ihe Alighting-circuiii of the car. ln order to obiain a better light-ing eect, the Supplemental reflector ai", extending around the walls of the front portion of the cylindrical chambcro, le employed, the :surface of said reflector boing conical and converging from the front of the lamp toward the roar, thun, in combination with the main reflector ci", concentrating the rays of light in front, so' that i-hc track in front of the car is lighted o2, extending around the outer periphery of to the best possible advantage. The said supplemental reliector is attached tothe cover b and may be provided for this purpose with a flange or offset am, secured, as shown, to the annulus forming the cover Z1 by means of the ffiange-ring b3, which secures the glass front 112, the said offset am being between the glass front b2 and the said annulus.

So uch of theapparatus as has been above descri ed forms an operative headlight adapted tol be used under normal circumstances independentlyyof the supplementallamp d, which is combined therewith andf'i'ntended for temporaryu e ih easeof emergency. The said supplemental l. mp may be arranged and applied in any suitable Way, but is preferably contained, as shown, in the front part of the casing c, a pocket ai being provided and adapted to contain and support the 1" cunt d2 of thev lamp d when a kerosene-lamp is used for this purpose, it being obvious, however, that the said pocket might be equally well utilized to support a candle or other device for independent lighting. Above the said pocket c is a deine or chimney of to provide for the necessary ventilation when the emergeney-lan'ip CZ is lighted, so to insure proper combustion, air beingI admitted from below, as through openings ai". (Shown inFig. 1.) \Vhen nstrueted in this Way, the supplemental lamp does not interfere with the proper arrangement of the convergent releetor e30, the latter having recesses @32 cut in the inner edge thereof, the lower one iitting around the neck of the lamp (l and the upper affording an opening for the prod ucts of combustion, so that the surface of the reflector need'not be smoked when the said lamp is lighted. This is accomplished by attaching the reflector a3 'to the cover Z1, as above described to that that portion of the reflector AWhiehmajrds over the fou nt Z2 will not interfere witn the removal of said fount from its supportingpoeket when the said cover Z1 is opened. Vhilethis is not an essential feature of the invention, it adds greatly to the utility and compaetness of the device, since if the 'refieetoi' ao were permanently secured to the walls of the chamber a it is obvious that a large opening would have to be provided in the lower surface of said reflector, thus injuring its eiiicieney, or more complicated means Yfor getting at the supplemental lamp to keep the same in operative condition would have f to be employed.

The cover or lid h may be secured to the ront of the casing in any suitable or usual Way, but, as herein shown, is provided at its lower end with a hinge h4, connected 'tothe lower end thereof, and a fastening device at the upper end, consisting of; a forked extension Z1, between the prongs of which a piv` oted arm hi is swung down and secu red by a thumb-screw 717, threaded on the end of said arm.
