LAMP OR SEARCHLIGHT FOR VEHICLES.

Be it known that I, GUIDO FORNACA, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Turin, Province of Piedmont, and State of Italy, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps or Searchlights for Vehicles (for which I have caused the filing of applications in Italy, August 10, 1916, Patent No. 155,598; in England, June 17, 1919, Patent No. 146,704; and in France, June '24, 1919, Patent N 0. 501,030) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lamps and particularly to headlights for automobiles. The object of the invention is to provide a construction in which the lamp bulb is remov- I overhangs at 21 within the rear able and replaceable through the rear of the lamp body without disturbing or soiling the front glass which is secured permanently in place in the body.
A further object of the invention is to make the lamp holding means quickly removable and easily andaccurately replaceable and snugly held in place against rat tling and loosening.

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings the lamp comprises an outer body portion 5 having an inturned front flange portion 6 within which the front glass 7 is held by the reflector 8 which at its rear end carries the ring 9 secured in the cylinder 10 inturned on the body 5. The reflector and body therefor form a hollow b rigid shell with the glass in front and a cylindrical opening in the rear, and the construction is such that the glass seal hermetically excludes the outside atmosphere.
Within the rear opening is fitted a cup 15 having a central tube 16 receiving the base 17 of lamp 18 which is locked in place by the spring pawls 19 engaging in apertures in the base 17. The front face of the cup 15 is concaved and carries a reflecting disk 20 merging with thecontour of the reflector S. The rear edge of the reflector 8 opening and against this edge the cup 15 is held by spring pressed plug 22 mounted in a tube 23 1n the rear cap piece 25 fastened in place by the lam pin 26 and bayonet slot 27. The plug 22 is connected with the current carrying cable 30 and is pressed against the contact 31 of the lamp 18 by the spring 32 held within the & tube 23 and the hollow head 33. This spring therefore serves not only to kee the cup 15 and cap 25 snugly and securely pressed into place but also holds the lamp and cable contacts together.
Due to the removability of the lamp 18 at the rear, the inner surfaces of the front glass 7 and reflector 8 permanently remain brilliant and unsoiled and all the parts maintain their perfect fit. The removable central reflector disk 20 is always accurately repositioned with relation to the restof the reflector and, the holding means for the lamp, comprising the studs 40 of the paWls, always insures accurate placement of the filament at the focal center of the reflector.
With these advantages the construction of this invention also combines ease and simplicity in manipulation. To renew a lamp it is only necessary to press and turn the cap 25 and remove the cap and cup, change the p, and replace the parts which will auto- 30 matlcally securely position themselves in proper relation when the cap 25 is locked in place.
I claim:
1. In a lamp, the combination of an inner g5 reflector, an outer casing, and means sup-' ported at the rear of said casing and removable from the rear of said casing, said means comprising a front portion and a cap portion, a lamp bulb removably carried by said front portion, and a spring device carried y said cap portion and making electrical contact with the lamp bulb and holding the said front portion in place.
