UNITEn STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
VILLIAM S. FOSTER, OF UTIOA, NEV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE FOSTER BROTHERS MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,550, dated July 20, 1897.
Application filed July 6, 1896` Serial No. 598,126. (No model To fri/Z whom, 71mg/ concern.-
Be it known that l, WILLIAM S. FOSTER, ofl
Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bedsteads.
In the drawings, Figure l shows a perspective view of the bedstead embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 shows in perspective details of the construction relating to the devices for securing the cross-bar and side rail of the bedstead to the post, as seen from the outer side. Fig. 3 shows the same as Fig. 2, as seen from the inner side. Fig. 4t shows substantially the same as Fig. 3, taken on a cross-section of the side rail. Fig. 5 shows a plan view of the parts shown in Figs. 2 and 3 in connection with a crossesection of the post. Fig. G shows a cross-section of the post and a plan view of the part of the rail-fas tening device which is attached to the post. Fig. 7 shows a modified form of the construction shown in Fig. f5. Fig. 8 shows details relating to the construction of bedstead-rail. Fig. 9 shows details in plan view of the adjustingjoint in the slat. Fig. l0 shows a cross-section of the slat.
Referring to the reference-figures in a more particular description of the device, l l indicates the bedsteadposts, 2 2 the cross-bars of the head and foot, and 3 3 the side rails which connect the head and foot. The post lis provided with a sleeve 4, secured thereto by a rivet 5 and having a fixed lateral projection G and an integral headed pin 7 The cross-bar 2 is secured to the projection (3, the crossbar being preferably of angle-iron, as shown. On the end of the side rail 3 is secured the fastener 8, which is provided with a grooved face to adapt it to fit the sleeve et on the post and is also provided with keyhole-like openings S and 8b. These openings, only one of which is in use at gradually thicker from the large end of the opening toward the middle of the fastener, so as to wedge between the head of the projection 7 and the side of the sleeve 4. The fastener 8 is also provided with a lateral projection 9, by means of which it is secured on the end of the angle side rail A supplemental side rail 3 is employed in the constructiou, which is detachably secured to the main rail 3 by hangers l0, which have hook-like heads that grip the horizontal web of the rail and the shank of which bears against the inner face of the vertical web of the rail.
In setting up Jthe bed the angle-iron side rail 3 may be used with its flat side uppermost, as shown in the drawings, or reversed with its edge upward, as desired. In removing the rail the supplemental rail is removed and the side rail may be used without the supplemental rail. In setting up the bed the head and foot are brought to the ends of the side rails, so that the projection 7 Will enter one or the other of the holes 8n or 8b, as the case may be, of the fastener S, and when entered the rail is dropped down, so that the fastener will engage with the head of the projection 7 and bind the fastener against the sleeve 4 on the post. In reversing the side rail it is changed end for end.
In the modied form of construction shown in Fig. 7 the headed projection 7 is employed in lieu of the projection 7, and this projection is integral with the rivet which passes through the modified form of sleeve 4 and through the post.
In the construction the sleeve 45* is cast or chilled onto the post and around the headed projection 7 n, and the end of the cross-bars are also cast or chilled in, as shown in Fig. 7.
The slat employed is of two sect-ions lla and 1lb, of angle material, secured together by T-shaped holders 12 l2. One of these holders is secured to each section and slides upon the other section, and they are each provided IOO with lips l2a and 12b, that hook around the edges of the angles, as shown. It is intended that the slat shall never be so far extended as to bring the holders 12 together.
The slats are provided with hooks 13 on their ends to engage on the web of the supplemental rail when required.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination in an extensionbedslat of the two angle-sections thereof placed back to back and two T-shaped holders, the stern portion of which occupies a position between the adjacent backs of the sections and having hooked lips embracing 'the edges of the sections substantially as set forth.
2. The combination in a beds'tead of a sleeve ysecured on the post having a lateral projection and a headed projection, a cross-bar secured to the lateral projection, a side rail, a 2
