No. 586,421. Patented July 13, 1897 W/ TH E SSE S //v VENTOH A TTOHN UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARK DELANEY, OF UNION HILL, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, AND HENRY I. DARLING, OF JERSEY OITY, NEW JERSEY.
COVER FOR WASHTUBS OR LIKE REC EPTACLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,421, dated. J u1y 13, 1897.
Application filed March 9, 1897. Serial No. 626,567. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARK DELANEY, of Union Hill, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Cover for Washtubs or Like Receptacles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a cover for stationary washtubs and other receptacles where the cover is subjected to dampness and to the action of steam or water, and to so construct the cover that while it is durable, simple, and economic it will maintain its original shape better than covers heretofore made for the same purpose.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved cover in completed form. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the cover, parts being in section and the various sections of the cover being shown as separated. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
The cover consists usually of five parts two cleats or side bars A and A, two leaves B and B, and a connecting-bar 12 for the side bars or cleats. The side bars or cleats A and A are placed opposite one another, and one or both of the side bars, usually, however, a single side bar or cleat, is inclined from its transverse center to its ends in opposite directions, forming the two inclined surfaces 10 shown in Fig. 1, in which figure the opposing side bar or cleat A is represented as having a straight inner face, (designated as 11.) The connecting-bar 12 for the side cleats or pieces A and A is in the nature of a lag-screw having a left-hand thread at one end and a righthand thread at the opposite end. The ends of the leaves B and B are made to correspond to the inner side edges of the cleats or side bars A and A. Therefore under the construction shown in the drawings one end of each leaf is straight and the opposing end is beveled. In the inner side edge of each leaf B and B a longitudinal groove 13 is made, whereby when the leaves are brought together after having been placed between the side boards or cleats the grooves 13 of the two leaves will receive the lag-screw or connecting-rod 12 and will completely conceal the same. In the inner side edge of each cleat or crossbar A and A a longitudinal groove 14 is made, following the contour of the said inner edge, as shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2. These grooves 14 receive tongues 15, which are formed upon the end portions of the leaves B and B, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4 In operation the side bars or cleats A and A having been properly adjusted through the medium of the lag-screw 12, the tongues of the leaves are entered into the grooves in the side bars or cleats, and the leaves are forced together until their inner edges abut, and the lag-screw, as heretofore stated, is contained within the inner side grooves 13, as shown in Fig. 3. Under such construction the cover is not only simply and economically made, but it will successfully withstand to a maximum degree the effects of steam, dampness, and water, thereby preventing warping.
In Fig. 1 the cover is shown as attached to a batten 16, which may be a portion of the tub or article which is designed to be covered or maybe independent thereof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A cover for washtubs or like receptacles, consisting of side bars, a connecting-bar provided with screw-threads on both its ends and having such ends entering the opposing edges of said side bars, and leaves located between the side bars, said leaves having a tongueand-groove connection with said side bars and concealing said connecting-bar, as and for the purpose specified.
2. A cover for washtubs or like receptacles, consisting of side barsor cleats, one of which has its inner face inclined from its transverse center in opposite directions to its ends, leaves having their ends conforming to the shape of the inner surfaces of the cleats or side bars for concealing said connecting-bar by the with which they are to engage, a tongue-an dleaves when said leaves are brought together, groove connection between the leaves and side as and for the purpose specified.
bars or cleats, a connecting-rod having its ends MARK DELANEY. 5 entering said side bars at their opposing edges Witnesses:
and stopping short of the outer edges of the HENRY I. DARLING,
same, and means, substantially as described, BENJ. J. DARLING.
