GARMENT-SUPPORTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,781, dated July 6, 1897.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE I-I. PHELPS, of Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Garment-Supporters, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters and figures on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention has for its object to improve and simplify garment or hose supporters. This class of device (to he herein described) contains what is designated as a clasp, engaging the garment to be supported, a claspsuspending connection depending from a suitable band or other usual device sustained by the body, and a clip to unite the clasp and sustaining connection.

The invention herein to be described relates to the clip and with the means for uniting it with the sustaining connection and with the clasp.

Figure 1 shows my invention embodied in one form. as holding up a stocking; Fig. 2, an enlarged detail, the clasp being opened; Fig. 3, a detail (to be described) oi the clip and the suspending connection. Fig. 4 shows a modified form of clip, and Figs. 5 and 6 yet further modifications of the clip.

The band A is shown as having attached to it at one end a slide a and as extended through the slide to leave a loop, and at its opposite end the said band has a hook a This band has attached to it what I designate as a sustaining connection I), which may be a cord or any other flexible web or device, its chief purpose being to permit the engagement with it of the clip C. The upper end of this clip is made of funnel shape (see Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 6) to leave an opening for the reception of one end of the sustaining connection.

In Figs. 1 to 3 the edges of the upper end 0 of the clip are bent inwardly to leave a suitable space or eye, in which the lower end of the connection is held.

In Fig. 4 the upper end f of the clip (therein marked F) is bent in slightly different manner to receive a fiat web, and in Fig. 5 the upper end h of the clip (therein marked H) is bent downwardly to leave a suitable space for the reception of the connection.

The space left in the upper part of the clip receives in it the ends of the connection I), said ends for the best results being enlarged by the application to them of a suitable ferrule, as 00, (see Fig. 3,) and said enlarged or ferruled end will be passed into said f unnelshaped space from the right, as shown in Fig. 3 by dotted lines, and then the ferruled end will be turned back upon the main. body of the connection, and in said figure it is shown as laid between the two branches of the connection, as shown by full lines, and the connection may then be drawn to the right, (viewing Fig. 3,) causing the ferruled part to enter the space of the clip, the folding back and inwardly of the connection, as shown, broadening the end of the connection, so that it cannot be drawn through the clip to the right.

The lower end of the clip 0 is shown as bent to form an eye in which may turn the clasp, to be described.

Preferably the lower end of the clip will have two prongs, which will be made to pass through two slits or holes 4 in the loop or eye part cl of the clasp, thus hinging or jointing the clasp to the lower end of the clip, each prong constituting an eye.

In Fig. 4 the eye part (1 of the clasp is shown 1 as having but one slit 9 entered by the eyed end f of theclip, (marked F.)-

The clasp herein shown is represented as composed of a metallic loop or plate 01 and a tab or back piece 6, of india-rubber, it having connected with it a cushioned or rubber button 6. The prong or prongs at the lower end of the clip are passed through suitable holes or a hole in the back piece and then through an opening or openings at or near the upper end of the loop or eye part, so that the clasp is hinged or jointed to the clip, hinging orjointing together of the parts being one of my novel features of this invention.

This invention is not limited,however,to the A i particular shape shown for the clip, whereby it may be hinged or jointed to the clasp, as in Figs. 1 and 4, and instead, as the perfect equivalent or rather converse, I may provide the lower end of the clip with a hole or holes, which may be entered by projections 25, extended from the upper end of a part of the clasp, as in Fig. 6.

This invention is not, however, limited to the particular shape or character of the clasp used or its two members, and instead of the particular clasp shown I may use any other usual clasp so long as it has a suitable opening or openings to receive the prong or prongs at the lower end of the clip, so as to form a hinged joint or connection, and has suitable surfaces to engage the garment to be held by it.

The particular manner shown of manipulating the end of the connection to fasten it securely in the space or eye of the clip is of great utility, yet the novelty possessed by my improved clip would not be departed from by securing the end of the connection in the space of the eye of the clip in some other or different or usual manner.

For use by ladies and children the suspending connection may be a narrow textile web attached to a web supported by or from the body in any usual manner.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a garment-supporter, a clip having a space or eye, combined with a supporting connection composed of cord provided with a ferrule, the ferruled end of said cord being bent backwardly between the two sides of the cord, substantially as described.

2. The clasp composed of a metallic loop and a back piece having a button, combined with a clip having prongs at its lower end, which prongs are extended through the said back piece and loop to form between them a hinged joint, substantially as described.
