ADOLPII HOFFMAN, OF COLUMBUS, OIIIO.
SWINGING LOUNGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,206, dated June 29, 1897.
Application filed February 17, 1897. Serial No 623,802. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPH HOFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Colum= bus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SwingingLounges and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a swinging lounge which shall be of simple, durable, and economical construction and at the same time of pleasing appearance and which shall also afford delightful comfort and ease to the user.
My invention consists of the improved construction hereinafter set forth and claimed, whereby the frame sustaining the lounge is stably supported upon the floor and the lounge elastically supported and capable of swinging laterally or longitudinally in the frame.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an embodiment of my present improvements; Fig. 2, a top plan View; Fig. 3, an end view, parts broken out to illustrate details of construction; Fig. 4, a detail of the shackle connection. 1
The reference-numeral 1 upon the different views designates the supporting-frame, having roller-footed leg-frames l, which are all of substantially the construction illustrated in my patent dated January 26, 1897, No. 57 5,838. As in my former patent referred to, the base or supporting-frame is furnished with curved spring-arms 2. In the extremities of these I place the compound shackles 3, which are fastened bymeans of a bolt and nut. These shackles are capable of easy oscillation in the direction of the length of the frame. At the under side of the shackle and preferably cast integral therewith is an eye 4, having its opening standing at right angles to the axis of motion of the shackle, and to this eye is attached a semicircular bail 5 by means of a double eye 6 and a bolt and nut. The lower extremities of the bail are provided with double' eyes 7, which are fastened hingedly by means of bolts and nuts to cars 8, near the four corners of the couch or lounge 9. This lounge is constructed to receive a removable mattress or it may be suitably upholstered, as desired.
The lounge is swung laterally by the occu pant with the aid of a cord 10, attached to base or supporting-frame l and passed over a pulley 11 in the side of the couch-frame, as shown, or it may be swung longitudinally by means of a cord 12, attached to a hook 12 on the shackle 3.
A couch thus constructed swings with great ease and affords all the agreeable sensations of a hammock without its well-known discomforts and awkwardnesses in use. It may be readily moved about to secure shade or sunshine, breeze, or freedom therefrom. It is ornamental and will constitute an attractive article of furniture in the household.
By making the connections of the bails at the four corners of the couch readily detachable the couch may be used as a stretcher for conveying an invalid or injured person from one place to another.
That I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A hammock comprising a su pportingframe 1 having spring-arms 2 2 provided with eyes at their upper ends, the axes of the eyes being transverse to the longitudinal direction of the couch, shackles 3 3 having double eyes, bolts connecting said double eyes with those on' arms 2 2, eyes 4 4 on the shackles having their axes parallel with the longitudinal direction of the couch, bails 5 5 having double eyes 6 6, bolts connecting eyes 6 6 and 4 4, double eyes 7 7 at the lower ends of the bails, eyes 8 8 on the couch, and bolts connecting eyes 7 7 and S 8, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a hammock, the combination of a couch, a supporting-frame having eyes whose axes are transverse to the longitudinal direction of the couch, shackles 3 having double eyes, bolts connecting said double eyes and those on the frame, eyes 4 on the shackles having their axes parallel with the longitudinal direction of the couch, bails 5 hinged to the couch and having double eyes 6, and bolts connecting eyes 4 and 6, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ADOLPH HOFFMAN.
W'itnesses:
' GEORGE M. FINoKEL, G. W. ALFRED.
