FELIX THOMAS FERNANDEZ, OF NEWV ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
'BoTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,774, dated June 22, 1897. Application filed August 26,1896. Serial No. 603,929. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FELIX THOMAS FER- NANDEZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to bottles, jugs, jars, and similar vessels; and the object thereof is to provide an improved vessel of this class which having been once filled and sealed cannot be emptied of its contents without leavin g evidence of the fact,
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which I have shown my invention applied to a bottle, said drawing being a central vertical section of the upper part of a bottle and the neck thereof provided with my improvement.
In the practice of my invention I provide a bottle or other vessel 5, having a neck 6, around the lower end of which is an annular shoulder or projection '7, on which is formed a screw-thread, and the neck is enlarged centrally thereof, so as to form a globular portion, as shown at 8, above which the neck is preferably straight, and said upper portion of the neck is adapted to be closed by a stopper 9.
The stopper 9 consists of a short tube of cork or similar material, into which is inserted a plug 10, of glass, which is enlarged at the upper end thereof, and I also provide a metal cap or plate 11, to which is secured a ring 12, and said cap or plate 11 is secured in place over the stopper or on the top thereof by a number of wire fastening devices 13, which extend downwardly along the sides of the upper end of the neck and over the enlarged central portion 8 thereof, and which are held in place by a brittle glass covering 14, which incloses said enlarged central portion of the neck and the upper end thereof and which is formed or placed around the same by a process familiar to all those acquainted-With the art of glass-working, said brittle glass covering being blown on or otherwise formed around the neck of the bottle and around the said wire fastening devices 13 at the time that the bottle is made.
Then the bottle has been filled and sealed and the plate 11 placed thereon over the stopper, the ends of the wire fastening devices are bent over said plate, as shown at 15, and secured thereto by solder or otherwise, and the said upper end of the neck of the bottle is also preferably provided with an annular bead 15, and the upper end of the brittle glass covering is correspondingly formed.
It will be understood that the cover let is not seen red to the neck of the bottle, but is simply placed around the same, and I also provide a cap or cover 17, which is closed at its upper and open at its lower end, and the lower end thereof is screw-threaded and adapted to engage with the screw-thread formed on the annular shoulder or projection 7 at the base of the neck, as shown at 18, and the object of said cap or cover is to protect the brittle glass covering 14 of the wire fastening devices 13 and to prevent the same from being knocked off in packing and shipping the bottle.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the following statement thereof.
The bottle or vessel is first filled in the usual manner, after which the cork, plug, or stopper is forced into position, and the plate 11 is placed thereon, and the upper ends of the wire fastening devices are then bent over the metal cap or plate and soldered thereto, and when the cork or stopper is thus secured in place it will be impossible to remove it or pull it out without breaking off the wire fastening devices or the glass coverings 12, by which they are held in place, and this operation will be proof of the fact that the bottle has been once filled and emptied.
It will also be understood that the cap or cover 17 may be connected with the vessel or secured in position whenever desired, and may also be easily detached therefrom, this being accomplished by means of its screwthread connection therewith, as hereinbefore described.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A bottle or other vessel, provided With a neck, a plug or stopper, provided with a metal cap or cover adapted to close the same, and Wire fastening devices secured to the neck by a glass covering, the upper ends of said fastening devices being adapted to be bent over and soldered to said cap or cover on the plug or stopper, substantially as shown and described.
2. A bottle or other vessel, provided With a neck, a plug or stopper, provided with a metal cap or cover adapted to close the same, and wire fastening devices secured to the neck by a glass covering, the upper ends of said fastening devices, being adapted to be bent over and soldered to said cap or plate 011 the plug or stopper, said plug or stopper being composed of a short tube and a glass plug, and said cap or cover being formed separately therefrom, substantially as shown and described.
3. A bottle or other vessel, provided with a neck, a plug or stopper provided with a metal cap or cover, said neck being also provided with an enlarged central portion, and Wire fastening devices secured to the neck by a brittle glass covering, the upper ends of said fastening devices being adapted to be bent over and soldered to said cap or cover, substantially as shown and described.
4. A bottle or other vessel, provided with a neck, a plug or stopper, provided With a metal cap or cover, said neck being also pro vided with an enlarged central portion, and Wire fastening devices secured to the neck by a brittle glass covering, the upper ends of said fastening device being adapted to be bent over and soldered to said cap or cover, and a removable cap or cover for said neck, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 20th day of August, 1896.
FELIX THOMAS FERNANDEZ. lVitnesses:
