Description

mf Model) W. 1. SMITH.
ANIMAL COVER.
No. 583,823. Patented June 1,1897.
W tnesses:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WASHINGTON I. SMITH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO VILLIAM M. AYRES, LOUIS H. AYRES, AND JAMES HAND, OF SAME PLACE.
ANIMAL-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,823, dated .T une 1, 1897.
Application led September 28, 1896. Serial No. 607,241. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, WASHINGTON I. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in'Animal-Oovers, of Which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a cover especially intended for application to cows or other cattle, the invention comprising, mainly, the means whereby the front portion of the cover is retained in position upon the head and neck of the animal and the means for securing the front and rear portions of the cover together.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view illustrating myiinproved animal-cover as applied to a dehorned cow, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the forward portion of the cover. p
The body A of the cover is in the present instance combined with surcingle-straps a d, but the body portion of the cover may be constr ucted in any preferred Way Without departing from my invention, the latter relating solely to the construction of the front or neck portion of the cover and to the means for securing the front and rear portions of the cover together.
In the case of horned cattle theneck portion of the cover can be kept in place by providing it with openings for the reception of the horns, but when the cattle have been dehorned such means of holding the neck por- `tion of the cover are not as convenient as the means which I employ.
I provide the front or neck portion of the cover with a loop f for passing over the head or neck of the animal anda ring h, surrounding the muzzle or nose, this device serving to retain the front portion of the cover in its proper 'position on the head and neck even when the animal is browsing and constantly changing-the position of the head.
The retaining device shown in the drawings is composed of rope, the looped portion f being conined in the hem g at the front end of the cover, while the ring portion h of the halter, when fitted over the muzzle or nose of the animal, as shown in Fig. l, serves to prevent the forward portion of the cover from rising or twisting out of its proper position on the head and neck. The ring h also provides a convenient means for the attachment of a tethering-rope t'.
The rear portion of the cover is retained by a cord or rope b and the front portion by a similar cord or rope d, each rope being secured at one end to one side of the cover by engagement with an eye m, adjacent to the edge of the cover, the free end of the rope being passed through an eye n near the edge of the other side of the cover and being knotted beyond the eye, so as to prevent it from slipping back through the same. By varying the position of the knots rthe front and rear edges of the cover can be drawn closely together or permitted to separate to any extent desired, the retainer being of the lowest possible cost, as is necessary in an article such as that to which my invention relates, which Inust be sold at a very low price.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. An animal-cover having its front portion extending up over the neck and top of the head and depending on each side of the same but open belonT the neck and combined with a head or neck loop and amuzzle-ring whereby said front portion of the cover is retained in position on the head and neck of the animal, substantially as specified.
2. An animal-cover having a front portion extending up over the neck and top of the head and depending on each side of the same but open below the neck and having at the front edge a hem 'conning a loop Which is adapted to pass over the head or neck of the animal, the lower ends of said loop being connected to av ring for surrounding the muzzle of the animal, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specilication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
VASHINGTON I. SMITH.
