M. I. ANDERSON.
OVERSHOBFOR HORSES. 7 No. 583,723. Patented June 1,1897.
WITNESSES INVENTOR du L flw/bfi UNITED STATES PATENT Grrrca MARY I. ANDERSON, OF NE lVARK, NElV JERSEY.
O VERSHOE FOR HORSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,723, dated June 1, 1897. Application filed January 23, 1897- Serial No. 620,413. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARY I. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at N ewark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overshoes or Guards for Horses, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to overshoes or guards for horses; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is adapted to be placed over the usual shoe, so as to prevent the horse from slipping on icy or frozen ground; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the device hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the followingspecification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a side View of the hoof of a horse, showing my improvement connected therewith; Fig. 2, a front view, and Fig. 3 a crosssection.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in said drawings I have shown at 5 a horses hoof and at 6 a metal shoe which is connected therewith in the usual manner, and in the practice of my invention I provide an overshoe or guard 7, which is composed of rubber, rubber and canvas, or other suitable material.
The overshoe or guard consists of a base flange or plate 8, which is so formed as to conform to the shape of the shoe 6 and which is provided with an upwardly-directed flange or rim 9, which extends entirely around the same and which is provided at one or more points with a vertical opening 10, which extends downwardly to the base flange or plate 8 and is adapted to be closed by lacing, as shown at 11. The shape of the upwardlydirected flange 9, in connection with the lacing 11, securely holds the overshoe or guard in place, and in practice I also secure in the u pwardlydirected flange or rim 9 metal hooks consisting of plates 13, which pass downwardly through said upwardly-directed flange or rim, the bottom portions of which are bent inwardly at right angles, as shown at 14, and then upwardly to form arms 15, on which are formed heads 16, which are provided with inwardly-directed prongs which are adapted to be inserted between the shoe 6 and the bottom of the hoof, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, said hooks being composed of spring metal for the purpose of allowing the device to be easily adjusted and placed over the flange or base plate 8 of the overshoe or guard. Between the flange and the shoe 6 is a plate 17, which is preferably composed of soft metal or other suitable material and which is intended to prevent the nails of the shoe from cutting and destroying the flange or base plate 8.
The flange or base plate 8 of the overshoe or guard is also corrugated or provided with serrations or teeth on the bottom thereof, as
shown in each of the figures of the drawings,
and by means of this device I prevent the horse from slipping, and also provide a cushion for the foot, which is advantageous under certain conditions.
My improvement is well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and,
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An overshoe or guard for horses, the same consisting of a base or flange plate which is v similar in form to the shoe, said base or flange plate being provided with an upwardly-directed flange or rim which extends upwardly and incloses the lower portion of the hoof, and provided with a metal plate to prevent the shoe chafing the said base or flange plate, substantially as shown and described.
2. An overshoe or guard for horses, the same consisting of a base or flange plate which is similar in form to the shoe, said base or flange plate being provided with an upwardly-directed flange or rim which extends upwardly and incloses the lower portion of the hoof, said flange or rim being provided with a vertical opening and with lacing therefor, said guard being provided with means for clamping the same to the shoe and also provided with a metal plate to prevent the shoe chafing the said base or flange plate, substantially as shown and described.
3. An overshoe or guard for horses, the same consisting of a base or flange plate which is similar in form to the shoe, said base or flange plate being provided with an upwardly-directed flange or rim which extends upwardly and incloses the lower portion of the hoof, said flange or rim being provided with a Vertical opening and with lacing therefor, and said base or flange plate being also provided with springs which operate in connection with the shoe to hold the overshoe or guard in position, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 18th day of January, 1897.
MARY I. ANDERSON.
