UNITED ASTATES PATENT -OFFICE HILBORNILL. ROOSEVELT, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 277,614, dated May 15, 1883.
i Application filed MarchnlOJBSl. (No model.)
llo all whom it may concern Beit known that LHILBORNE L. ROOSE- VELT, of the city, county, and State of-NeW York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Automatic Overshoes, ot' which the following is a full, true, and exact desription, reference being had to the uccompanyingd rawings.
overshoe which could be put on the foot without the aid ofthe hand or hands ofthe wearer. By my invention an overshoe is made which is"` readily put in position by simply placing the foot of the wearer therein.
My invention will be readily understood lfrom the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a rnbber shoe, showing my improvement. Fig; 2 is a plan; Fig. 3, a face view ot' the stiffeningplate, and Fig. 4 a view showing said plate in section.
A represents an overshoe, which may be of rubber or other suitable material, and may, if desired, be lined. At the heel ot' the shoe is placed the stieningand guiding metallic plate B. This plate is shapedyto the heel ofthe shoe to conform to and be in contact therewith throughout its whole extent, as clearly shown, the lower part projecting along the bottom ot' the shoe, and the upper part forming a loop or fold over the upper edge ofthe material, thereby protecting the same. This loop may be fastened by rivets E. The metal surface, being smooth, presents but little hinder- It has been found very desirable to make an ance to the slipping of the heel into the shoe, and by its peculiar' outward curve the foot of the wearer is readily guided to the proper position.
I am aware that a rubber shoe has been provided at its heel with a metal bar, secured thereto by passing a prong ofthe bar through the heel, the bar being,` provided with an upwardlyturned strap at its base, which, when pressed upon by the foot, throws the heel of the rubber inward, the purpose of the bar being to prevent the rubber heel from slipping down and from around the inside shoe-heel; but my invention differs materially therefrom, and, having` fully described it,
Vfhat l claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, in an overslioe, of the metallic plate B, shaped to conform to the heel ofthe shoeand be in Contact therewith throughout its whole extent, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in an overshoe, of the metal plate B, shaped to coliform to the heel of the shoe and be in contact therewith through out its whole extent, and having the portion C folded over the top edge ofthe shoe to pro tect the same, substantially as andfor the pur pose set forth.
HILB ORNE L. ROOSEVELT.
