T.J. WINANS. RIVETING MAGHINE.
N0. 582.839. Patented May 18, 1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE THOMAS J. YVINANS, OF BINGHAMTON, NEYV YORK.
RIVETING-MAGHINE.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 582,839, dated May 18, 1897. Application filed September 23, 1896. Seria1 N0. 606,723. (N0 model.)
E 0 all wlwm z't may concarn:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. XVINANS, a citizen of the Unied Stabes, and a resident 0f Binghamtou, in the county of Broome and Stute oi:' New York, have invented certain new und useful Improvements in Riveting-Machines, 0f which 1:11e following is a specifica- 'oion.
My invennion relates 110 improvemeuts in hydraulie rivening-machines; und the object of my invention is t0 furnish a hydraulic riveting-maehine f0r heavy work which Will be very compact and Whi0h m'ay be operaiaed wiizhoui: the aid 0f a quick-running pump 01 an accumulator und the necessary hezwy und isroublesome piping that the use 0f an accumulator 01 pump entails.
In the aceompanyihg drawings, forming paris of this specification und in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views, Figur-e l is a central sectional elevation of my improved riveting-machine; Fig'. 2, a seeiaion of Fig. 4 011 1ine 5 5; Fig. 3, a section 'of Fig. 4 011 line 44; Fig. 4, a central sectiona1 elevation 0f part of iahe air or steam cy1inder, and of the valve und valve-ports through which air 01 steam is eonducted to 01 away from this eylinder, showing in side e1evation means f0r operating the va1ve; Fig. 5, an en1arged seciaion of Fig. 1 on 1ine 2 2; Fig. 6, an enlarged section 0f Fig. 1 online 1 l; und Fig. 7, an end elemtion of the hydraulic plunger, Fig. l.
A is the air 01 steam eylinder, within Whi0h are two pistons B C.
D is a piston-rod 01 plunger carried by pis- 13011 B; E, a hollow piston-rod er plunger GEH- ried by piston C. :The piston-rod 01 plunger D is adapted 150 work in ehe ho1low rod E, and the 10d E in a cylinder F, whieh is attached to 01 forms part 0f nhe casting 0f cylinder A. The cylinder F is shown in the drawings 0011- neeted ab is 10Wer end With a cylinder G, in whieh is a pisison H 0f well-known construction, which is used to form the head up0n the rivec. 'Ihe eylinder G forms a continuaision 0f the cylinder F, and, if desired, it may be in 1ine with this latter cylinder. The cylinders F und G, as wel1 as ishe hollow piston- 10d E, eoni;ain the hydraulie liquid.
I is a yoke which is attached n0 eylinders A und G, the 10Wer arm 0f which carries the anvil J, which holds one end 0f the rivet while a head :is being formed upon :its ohe1 end.
Ab the commencement 0f the operation of the machine both pistons B C are a1; ehe fa1 end 0f the cy1inder A. The va1ve K, whiohis a h0110w p1ug divided by a wal1 a into two compartmenizs b c, the former 0f which communieates With the eompressed air 01' steam spuce und the latter with the exhausn, is 110W turned so that he air 01 steam is admitted t0 p011; L und thence t0 the upper end 0f piston O, which it drives (10WIL' 1 0 ehe bottom 0f' cylinder A und the h0110w piston-rod of whieh is driven down 130 ehe boistom of c'y1inder F, displacing in this cylinder und the cylinder G an-amount of liquid equa1 130 i'ES volume und driving 0ut the piston H a eorresponding+v distanee. Thus 13116 first part of. i;he stroke is performed with a 0Omparatively small expendiure 0f power.
The piston E carries ab its lower end a head M, which is adapte d t0 engage and make a tight joint wi'th iahe lower end 0f the eylinder F, which is contracted in diameter a1; this point f01 this purpose. Ab all other poini3s the inside diz1meter'bf eylinder F is somewhat greater thzu1 he diameter of head M, so tha the piston JOd und head ean p1ay freely therein.
The piston C und. its eonneoted pmts having been driven all the way down, the valve K is given a quarter zum and the air 01 steam is admitted 110 the port; N Whi1e the exhaust-porn N is opened. The liquid that is beoween the p iston E und cylinder F being now unab1e to esca'pe forms a bearingagainst iahe head M ahd locks this head in plane und preveniss the piston O from rising duriug the completion of the driving of the rivet. The piston B is '110W driven down as far as may be necessary t0 f01n1 the head up0n the rivela, the liquid in Ehe cylinder G being undel pressure of the piston-rod D, which is driven down in the hollow oylinder 01 piston E by the downward movement of 'the piston B, t1he piston-rod D driving the liquid out 0f the hollow piston E and into the rear end of the cylinder G, forein g t-he piston H outward und compleiaing the formation of the head of the rivet ab a, high pressure. 113 Will be observed that"the area of the pistou B is very much greater than the area 0i:' the end of its rod D, 2LIld henee the pressure exerted by the piston 5. In a'stezun, low-pressure unter, 01 air actuated hydrnulic machine, in combination, an nir, wnter, 01 stean1 cylinder, ahydraulie cylinder tl1e inside dimneer of Whieh is contraeted ab one point, a piston in said air 01 stezun cylinder, a hollow pi-ston-rod carried by said piston working in said hydraulie cylinder, a head carried on said piston-rod capable 0f a slight longitudinal in ovement tl1ereon adapted when l3ll piston is all the way Clown to 1nake n tight j 0int With the eontracted par1; 0f said hydranlic cylinder, a liquid passnge 01 passages passing througl1 the Wall of said 110110W piston-rod adapted t0 be closed so 13116 passage 0f liquid When said piston is all Ehe way down and open t0 tl1e passage 0f liquid when said piston is lifted, a, sec0nd piston in said air 01' stean1 eylinder and a solid piston- 10d cnrried thereby adapted t0 pass ceniarnlly ul1rough snid fi1st piston und into said hollow pistonrod.
G. In a stezun, low-pressure wacer, 01 air nctuated hydraulic 1nacl1ine, in comnination, an ai1, unter, 01 steann eylinder, a hydrnulic cylinder the inside dizuneter 0f Whi0h is con tracted ab one point, a piston in said air, wate1, 01 steam eylinder, a hollow pison-rod 0&1- 1ied by said piston Working in, said hydraulic cylinder, a head ea1ried 0n said piston-rod capable of a slight longitudinal move1nenb tl1ereon adapted wl1en the piston is all the way Clown t0 engage and make a t-ight joint winh the contraeed p2ub 0f said hydraulic eylinder, a liquid passage 01 passages passing through the Wall 0f said hollow piston-rod adapted to be closed 130 the passage of liquid Wl1en s'aid pison is all the waydown and open t0 tl1'e passage 0f liquid when said piston is lifted, a perforntion 0r perforations passing longitudinally upward through (alle Wall of said hollow piston-rod and throngh the piston, a second piston in said airwater, or stean1 cylinder, and a solid piston-rod ea1ried thereby a-dnpted t0 pass cent-rally through said first piton und int0 said hollow piston-rod.
