Be it known that we, Jason WILLIAMSON and Emma XVILLIAMSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Greenwood, in the county of Wise and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding Valves for Steam- Engines or the like, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in sliding valves for steam engines or the like; and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby a maximum of efficiency is attained.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our improved sliding valve whereby certainvimportant advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.
In order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein is disclosed a view partly in side elevation and partly in section, illustrating a sliding valve constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention in applied position.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes the cylinder of a steam engine or the like having mounted for reciprocal movement therein. the piston 2 operatively engaged, as indicated at 8, with a crank on the drive shaft 5.
6 denotes a steam chest in communication with the opposite end portions of the cylinder 1 through the medium of the ports 7, said ports being under control of the slide valve 8. Operatively engaged with the valve 8 and projecting exteriorly of the chest 6 is a stem or rod 9, the outer extremity whereof being operatively engaged within a suitable support 10. At a predetermined point exterior of the chest, the stem or rod 9 has pivotally engaged therewith a rigid bar or link 11 also in pivotal engagement with a pitman 12 operatively engaged with a sec ond crank 14 of the drive shaft 5, and it is to be particularly observed that the link 11 is of a length less than the throw of the crank 14.
As is believed to be self-evident, the valve 8 will not be moved until the piston 2 has reached substantially the ends of its strokes as the interposed bar or link 11 will permit the valve to remain idle during the major portion of the stroke of the piston. By having the valve 8 operated in accordance with my invention as herein embodied, it has been found that a material saving in steam or other expansive fluid is attained.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a sliding valve constructed in accordance with our invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that our invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out our invention in practice except as defined by the appended claims.
"We claim:
1. An engine comprising a cylinder, a steamchest in communication with the cylinder through the medium of ports, a piston within the cylinder, an operative engagement between the piston and drive shaft, a slide valve within the chest for controlling the flow through the ports, a stem carried by the slide valve extending exteriorly of the chest, a drive shaft provided with a crank, a pitman operatively engaged with the drive shaft, and a link in pivotal engagement with the stem of the slide valve and the pitman, said link being of a length less than the throw of the crank of the drive shaft. i
