WILLIAM s. MCFERREN, OF CHAMBERSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOB. or ONE- THIRD T0 HARRY A. BERG-NEE, or GI-IAMBERSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
DOUBLE-ACTION PUMP.
Application filed June 13, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM S. MCFER- REN, a citizen of the United States residing at Chambersburg, in the county of Franklin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double-Action Pumps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Wlll enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pumps and it relates more particularly to that class known as force pumps in which two pistons are employed.
The invention has for its specific object the provision of a pump of this character in which the two piston chambers are arranged in contact, one being disposed above the other, each of the pistons being operated by a single operating handle, so connected with the piston rods as to cause the pistons to actuate alternately.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the novel construction and in the peculiar arrangement, combination and adaptation of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings which, with the numerals of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification and'in which:
Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, of a pump embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing a modilied form of connection between the operating handle and 'valve rod.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by numeral, 1 designates a well, and 2 is a well pipe provided with the usual flap valve 3. 1 and 5 designate pump cylinders, disposed one above the other, the lower cylinder 5 being disposed slightly to one side. The cylinder head 6 separates the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 27, 1917. Serial No. 103,485.
two cylinders and serves as a head for both cylinders, being provided with an opening 7 connecting the interior of the chambers.
8 is an operating handle pivoted at the upper end of the standard 9, the said handle being provided with a series of openngs 10, 10 so as to provide for general adjustment, the handle being attached to the standard by means of a pivotal pin 11 passed through the bifurcated upper end of the standard. The openings 10, 10 are connected to the hooked upper ends of the rods 12 and 13, which rods are pivotally connected at their lower ends to the upper ends of the rods 14. and 15 which in turn are connected to the pistons 16 and 17 contained within the cylinders 4 and 5 respectively. 18, 18 are keepers, consisting of metallic strips placed upon opposite sides of the pump 2 and between the outer ends and in an aperture provided therein are journaled roller bearings 19 between which are passed the pump rods 14 and 15. The pistons 16 and 17 are each provided with the usual form of flap valve 20, 20. 21, 21 are braces for strengthening the connection between the pump rods and piston handle.
In Fig. 2 of the drawings I have shown a slight modification in the connection between the operating handle of the pump and the pump rods. In this construction, the keeper 18 is disposed at a point above the well platform and at its outer ends the pump rods 14 and 15 are passed between roller bearings 19, as shown. By this construction a direct vertical movement is imparted to the piston rods'by the movement of the pump handle.
From the foregoing description, the operation of the pump will be at once readily understood. In'the drawings I have shown the operating handle in such position as to insure the closing of the valve in the upper cylinder, while the valve in the lower cylinder is open. In forcing the pump handle downward, the lower piston valve 20 will be closed by the pressure of water contained in the upper cylinder and in the continued upper movement the waterv contained in the pipe above the upper'chamber will be raised until the piston has reached its limit of upward movement. A reverse movement of the pump handle will serve to close the valve in the upper piston chamber and simultaneously open the Valve in the lower chamber.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new is A double acting pump comprising two eccentrically mounted pump cylinders having a common head, the heads of the two cylinders having eccentrically formed openings for the reception of piston rods, pistons mounted one in each cylinder, piston rods eccentrically connected to each piston and mo'i able through said apertures, brace rods within said cylinders, one being connected to each piston rod and to a piston, and 15 means'for actuating the piston rods.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
