July 18, 1950 P. B. TISIE PORTABLE RIVETER Filed March 27, 1944 (Ittornegs Patented July 18, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PORTABLE RIVETER Patrick B. Tisie, Detroit, Mich. l Application March 27, 1944, Serial No. 528,229
3 Claims. l
The present invention relates to portable riveting machines.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a portable riveter having means for clamping the work prior to the riveting operation so that the pieces of work will be united in face-toface contact and will be held in this position during the upsetting of the rivet.
Another object of the invention is to provide a portable riveter having a work-engaging clamp which is projected simultaneously with the plunger so as to engage the work rst before the plunger upsets the rivet and to provide resilient spring means to permit the movement of the plunger relative to the clamping sleeve after the same has engaged the work in the vicinity of the rivet being set.
Another object of the invention is to provide a riveting machine of the above-mentioned type having means for permitting adjustment of the strokes to facilitate the use of the riveter with rivets of various lengt-hs.
Another object of the invention is to provide a resilient spring means for retracting a rivet plunger and the clamping sleeve after the rivet has been set in the work.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent during the course of the following description of the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a riveting ,A
machine showing portions thereof broken away to illustrate the various structural details thereof and to show the manner in which the work is held in the riveter between the jaws thereof prior to the rivet-upsetting operation;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal cross sectional view taken on line 2-2 in Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows showing the rivet plunger and clamping sleeve, retractingmeans and showing the manner in which the stroke of the rivet plunger may be adjusted to accommodate rivets of various lengths;
Figure 3 is a transverse cross sectional view taken on line 3-3 in Figure l looking in the direction of the arrows further illustrating the manner in which the stroke of the rivet plunger may be adjusted for accommodating rivets oi. various lengths; and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary side elevational view similar to Figure 1 showing the clamping sleeve in its opposite position and the rivet plunger in position to upset the end of the rivet.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of i1- lustrating the invention like reference characters will be employed to designate like parts throughout, the reference character 5 will generally be employed to designate a casing or housing of a portable riveter including a handle portion 6, and a hollow casing section 'I having spaced walls 8 connected to the top and bottom by parallel walls I 3. The side walls 3 are extended as at l2 to provide spaced ears I3 between which is received a yoke member I 4 having jaw portions I5 and I Ii. Bolts II extend through suitable apertures in the ears I3 and the yoke frame Ill and nuts. I8 are threaded on the bolts to securely hold the yoke frame I4 in place relative to the casing I and handle portion 6. The yoke frame I4 has an opening I9 formed in the jaw portion I5 for receiving a removable anvil 2U recessed as at2I to receive the head of a rivet R which, as shown in Figure 3, has been passed through openings in the overlapped work pieces W. The other jaw portion I3 of the yoke frame I 4 is provided with a bore 22 in axial alignment with the anvil 20 and said bore is fitted with a work-clamping sleeve 23 having its work-engaging end 24 projecting slightly beyond the edge of the jaw I6 in the direction of the work W.
Slidably mounted within the work-clamping `sleeve 23 is a rivet plunger 25 and said sleeve 23 is provided with longitudinal slots 26 arranged in diametrically opposed Vrelation for receiving a transverse pin 2l tted in the end of the rivet plunger 25. The rivet plunger 25 may slide relative to the sleeve 23 between the limits of the slot length 26 as indicated in Figure 1. The inner ends ofthe sleeve 23 and rivei'l plunger 25 project `into the housing 5 between the side walls 8 thereof and the extreme inner end of the rivet plunger 25 is provided with an axially threaded bore 29 for receiving an adjusting screw 3! having an enlarged head 3|. A slotted washer 32 may be interposed between the extreme inner end of the rivet plunger 25 and the head3l of the adjusting screw so as to project the rivet plunger beyond a predetermined distance and permit the riveting machine to be used with rivets of various lengths. By substituting slotted washers 32 of diierent thicknesses, between the inner end of the rivet plunger 25 and the head 3l, said rivet plunger may be made to project corresponding distances and accommodate rivets of different lengths' and differentsizes.
Encircling the inner end of the rivet plunger 25l is a coil spring 34 having one end in abutting relationship with the inner end of the work clamping sleeve 23 and the other end in abutting relationship and engagement with the slotted washer 32.
Pivotally mounted within the housing 5 is an operating lever 31 carried on a pivot pin 38 and said operating lever 3l is bifurcated at one end for receiving a roller or the like as at 39 pivotally mounted on a stub pin 40. Formed integral with the operating lever 31 is a cam projection 4l which is presented to the adjusting screw 3l so as to project the rivet plunger and work clamp ing sleeve 23 when air pressurel is admitted to the riveter and the pivoted lever 31 swung on its pivot 38 by means of a cam operator 43 having its cam face Ml in contactual engagement with the roller 33. In squeeze type riveters in which the rivet is compressed, the cam bar B3 is usually connected to the plunger of a fluid compression system and said plunger is mounted in a cylinder communicating with a source ofpressure so that admission of pressure to the cylinder will move the piston toward one end and cause the cam arm 43 to project into the housing 5 and through the handle portion 6 so as to depress the pivoted lever 31 by the contactual engagement of the camsurface 44 with the roller 39.
The adjusting screw head 3l is provided with a series of circumferentially spaced radially eX- tending slots d5 for receiving a tool or the like to facilitate adjustment of the head and the backing off of the screw for the insertion of a slotted washer 32 of increased or decreased thickness.
The rivet plunger 25 and clamping sleeve 23 are retracted by means of coil springs 50 disposed on each side thereof and one end of each coil spring is attached to a pair of oppositely arranged screw studs 5'! in the inner walls 8 of I'.
the housing 5 while the opposite ends of the screws are hooked over threaded studs 52 as at 53 extending in diametrically opposed relation from one end ofthe sleeve 23.
In operation, the work W is placed on the anvil in'overlapping relation, with the apertures therein in registry and the rivet R received therein with the head of the rivet arranged in the annular recess 2l. The pressure control valve of the riveter (not shown) is then operated to r' project the cam arm 43 in a straightline path so thatv the cam surface 44 will engage the roller 39 and rock the cam lever 3l on its pivot 38. Upon rocking movement of the cam lever 3l the cam projection 4| is moved into engagement with the head 3| of the screw 30 so as to project the clamping lever 23 and rivet plunger 25 simultaneously until the end 24 of the sleeve engages the work W. When the end 24 of the sleeve engages the work, the overlapping ends thereof will be clamped together so that the meeting faces thereof will ybe in mutual engagement so that continued operation of the cam lever 3l -will cause the plunger 25 to move relatively to the sleeve 23 and compress the spring 3l] so as to clamp the work under spring tension. After the clamping sleeve 23 has been moved into clamping engagement with the work W as shown in Figure li. the end of the rivet plunger moves into engagement with the rivet R and the socket or recess 5E in the end thereof engages the end of the rivet and causes the same to be upset. Uponv retraction of the cam arm 43 the springs move the sleeve 23 and plunger 25 to their initial starting position. When it is desired to shorten or lengthen the stroke of the rivet plunger to accommodate rivets of various sizes, the bolts I1 and nuts I8 connecting the yoke I4 with the housing 5 may be removed so that the head of the bolt 3l may be untightened and a slotted washer 32 of different thickness inserted in lieu of the one previously used.
It is to be noted that the transverse pin 2l operates in the bore 22 of the jaw I6 and during the major portion of the time the slots and pin 25 and 21 are confined within said bore to be removed from the path of foreign matter and obstructions.
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred embodiment thereof and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
