ROBERT WV. J. KRAUS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
STAM P-BUNDLING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,749, dated May 18, 1897.
$erial No. 588,58 l. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that'I, ROBERT W. J. KRAUS, of New York,in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stamp-Bundling Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention has relation to devices for packing postage-stamps, but may be applied to any stamps, cards, seals, &c., that have gummed or adhesive sides.
It is well known that stamps by being gummed on one side stick together, by which many are torn or destroyed, great difficulty being experienced in keeping them apart, particularly when they are carried bya person'on the body for convenience, and by reason of this sticking together many are lost. Therefore to remedy this difficulty and enable persons to carry stamps safely, separately, and cleanly is the object of my invention.
To this end my invention consists in packing stamps in packages of twenty-five, more,
or less, and by putting between each stamp a separating-piece, which may be of wood or other suitable material, and binding them together by any approved form, so that by the removal of the binding one or more stamps may be removed and the remainder bound again until required, when the same operation may be repeated until they are all exhausted. These separating-pieces are preferably beveled on one of their sides at both edges, but retain a uniform thickness in the middle, so that all will lie snugly together. This bevel is made for the purpose of lightness and to prevent the moistener from Wetting the neXt adjacent stamp and at the same time permitting uniform pressure on all parts of the surface of the stamp.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a package of stamps done up ready for use. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the separator detached.
a represents a series of separators, arranged one upon the other, between which the stamps are located.
1) indicates the beveled edges of the separator, the function of which has already been described.
c is a groove extending lengthwise of each separating-piece, and d indicates a suitable binding adapted to be wrapped around a number of the separators so as to fit within the groove just mentioned, so that'a number of the separating-pieces can be securely bound together.
It should be observed that stores may purchase the stamps in sheets and separate them and place them in packages for sale, or a post-office may, for convenience of the public, pack them in bundles when printed and dispose of them in bundles as public use may demand.
The separators can be used over and over again, but if lost or wasted they are of little value, asthey can be made very cheap.
Having thus fully described my invention, avhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, the herein-described stamp-bundler comprising a series of separator-pieces arranged one above the other and having the beveled side edges on the face opposite that upon which the stamp or like part is placed, and a binding to surround the same as set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a package for carrying stamps or the like consisting of a series of separators having the beveled side edges on the face opposite that upon which the stamp or like part is placed, the upper surface of each separator being provided with a groove, and a binding adapted to be passed around and rest within the groove of the uppermost and under the bottom separating-piece so as to bind them together, substantially as described.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a package for the carrying of stamps or the like,
comprising a series of blocks having the reduced or beveled outer edges on the face opposite that upon which the stamp is placed, said blocks being provided with grooves, and a binding adapted to enter the groove of the upper and beneath the lower block, and so arranged that the Whole may be securely bound together.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aflix my signature in presence of 10 two witnesses.
ROBERT W. J. KRAUS.
