UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
JOHN MARKINSKY, OF WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA.
ENVELOPE OR PROTECTOR FOR CARDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329,925, dated November 10, 1885.
Application filed September 2, 1894. Serial No. 142,067. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JOHN MARKINSKY, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Vinnipeg, in the Province of Manitoba and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelopes Or Protectors for Cards, Src.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to that class of envelopes or protectors which are adapted for sending Christmas and other cards, photographs, books, and similar articles through the mails.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved envelope or protector. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view with the top board removed. Fig. 4 is a perspective view illustrating a modication. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view thereof.
Corresponding parts in t-he figures are denoted by the same letters of reference.
Referring to the drawings, A and B designate, respectively, two sheets or pieces of board, preferably formed of thick card or paste board, and forming the sides of my improved envelope or protector. These boards are preferably of rectangular shape, and are provided with a perforation, a, at about the center of each of its four edges, which perforations register when the boards are placed together. The perforations are formed some distance from the edge of the boards, so that a large margin, a?, is left to protect the edges of the inclosed card or book, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 5 of the drawings, and each corner of the boards is cut Off, as shown at a3, to obviate damage to the corners of the boards. Upon the inner face of the board B are provided flexible strips A2, secured at their ends by pasting or otherwise.
In practice the card, photograph, or other article to be inclosed is placed between the boards, its ends being inserted under the strips A2. It is then secured in position by means of cords Or tapes C, passed through the registering perforations a and around the edges of the boards, and secured by tying, When the package is ready to be addressed and forwarded through the mails.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 another method of 'applying the securing-cord is shown, the inclosed article being retained in position between the boards by a single securing-cord, D, passed through the registering perforations a, and crossed over the outer faces of the boards, as shown in Fig. 4, and tied at its ends. In this construction an address-label,-E, may be pasted or other- Wise secured over the strands of the cords, passing from the perforations over the face Of the boards, and thus preclude possibility of removal of any of the contents of the package Without cutting the cord or breaking the label.
The Operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood and appreciated. The device is very simple and inexpensive in construction and convenient and ecient in use, and it serves to completely protect the inclosed card or article from any damage or defacement from postmarks, stamps, or other causes liable to occur when such articles are forwarded through the mails in Ordinary paper envelopes. At the same time the contents of the package may be more ready and conveniently inspected than if inclosed in an envelope of ordinary construction.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Lrtters Patent# As an improvement in envelopes or protectors for cards, photographs, books, and the like, the combination, with the board provided upon its inner face with strips secured at their ends and having perforations near its edge, of the board provided with corresponding perforations, and cord or tape passed through said registering perforations, sub'-A stantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afi-lx my signature in presence Of two witnesses.
JOHN MARKINSKY.
Witnesses:
B. J. WiLsON, JOHN PATTERSON.
