PATENT OFFICE.
PLASTER-PACKAG E.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 730,911, dated June 16, 1903.
Application filed September 11, 1899. Serial No. 130,068. (No modeli) To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK F. HAwKINs, a citizen of the United States, residing-at Troy, county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plaster-Packages, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to such improvements; and it consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and subsequently claimed. I
Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view of an adhesive sheet with medicament applied theretoandacoveringsheetsuperposedthereon as the same appears in the operation of making my improved plaster-packages, a portionof the covering-sheet being broken away. Fig. 2 is a crosssection of such a sheet superposed upon a supporting-block with the die in position for cutting out one of the plasterpackages. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the plasterpackage. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the same, taken 011 the broken line a 4 in Fig.
The object of my invention is to supply to the trade adhesive plasters in a convenient form, with their adhesive surface protected from contact with external objects, and to protect medicament which may be deposited upon such adhesive surface from the action.
of the atmosphere.
In carrying out my invention I apply to each separate plaster a protecting-cover, secured thereto by adhesion only along its peripheral edge.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a plaster-sheet having an adhesive surface 2, the same being any known form of'adhesive plaster, such as thewell-known rubber plaster. Upon the adhesive surface of this sheet I preferably apply medicament in any desired quantity. The sheet 1 is preferably of a size sufficient to include a number of plasters, and the medicament is preferably applied thereto at intervals and in small quantities, as shown at 3 in Fig. 1, such deposits of medicament being separated by intervals of the adhesive surface of the plaster-sheet. hen the inedicament has been so applied to the adhesive sheet, I superpose thereupon a covering-sheet 4, preferably of non-adhesive material, as
.shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The duplex sheet thus formed is then subjected, while supported upon a block or table 5, to the action of the die 6,- adapted to cut therefrom plasters of a desired size, so out that each plaster will contain one of the deposits 3 of medicament. A hollow die is employed for this purpose having a sharp cutting edge, whereby the operation of cutting the plaster from the sheet forces down into engagement with the adhesive sheet that portion of the covering-sheet engaged by the edge of the die, whereby the die cuts from the duplex sheet both a portion of the adhesive sheet and a like portion of the coveringsheet, each of the size desired for the plaster.
The cutting operation not only serves to define the shape of the plaster, but also serves to force together tightly the peripheral edges of the cut-off portion of the adhesive sheet and covering-sheet,thereby securing the coveringsheet to the adhesive sheet with the adhesive surface inclosed between the two sheets and protected thereby.
The covering-sheet may be of any desired material; but I prefer to use some non-adhesive material impervious to air and moisture, such as wax or paraffin paper, whereby when the same is applied to a sheet of rubber plaster and portions are cut therefrom by a die in the manner LbO"6 described a hermetically-sealed chamber will be formed between the two sheets, wherein a deposit of medicament upon the adhesive sheet can be retained for an indefinite period without deterioration from atmospheric action.
lVhen it is desired to use one of the plasters, a package may be opened by separating the cohering edges at one point and then pulling the two sheets apart, leaving the adhesive surface of the plaster-sheet ready for application to the place desired.
By having the covering-sheet secured by adhesion only to the peripheral edge of the plaster-sheet I am able to retain the adhesive qualities of the plaster-sheet and at the same time aiford protection to the whole of such adhesive surface.
IVhen desired, the deposits 3 of medicament may be omitted, and, if desired, the medicament my be incorporated in the adhesive sub stance with which the surface of the plastersheet is coated.
The plaster-sheets may be prepared of any known size and the plaster cut therefrom by a gang of dies in any known manner.
By the use of wax or paraffin paper as a covering for the adhesive sheet I am able to greatly facilitate the operation of cutting out the plasters, for the reason that at each cutting operation the edge of the die is lubri-' cated by the wax or paraffin and prevented thereby from contact with the adhesive substance with which the plaster-sheet is coated, so that the plaster-packages readily fall away from the die after the cutting operation without adhesion thereto.
My improved plaster-packages can be safely handled and packed together for the trade without danger of their adhesion to external objects or one to another, thereby greatly facilitating their transportation. I
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A plaster-package comprising medicament in a form susceptible to atmospheric influences inclosed in a hermetically-sealed chamber formed between two impervious sheets, one adhesive and the other non-adhesive, one of said sheets being superposed upon the other, and having their edges, only, in sealed adhesive contact with each other.
A plaster-package comprising in combination two impervious sheets, one adhesive, the other non-adhesive, applied one to the other, and having their peripheral edges,
only, forced into sealed adhesive contact with each other, thereby forming between saidimpervioussheetsahermetically-sealedchamber between inner portions of said sheets not in adhesive contact; and medicament, in a form susceptible to atmospheric influences, supported upon said adhesive sheet within said chamber. y
A plaster-package comprising an impervious adhesive sheet; a deposit of medicament on the central portion thereof; and an impervious non-adhesive sheet superposed upon said adhesive sheet and medicament, the extreme edges, only, of said impervious sheets being in sealed adhesive contact, and their intermediate portions surrounding said medicament being not in adhesive contact.
t. A plaster-package comprising medicament in a form susceptible to atmospheric influences inclosed in a hermetically-sealed chamber formed between two impervious sheets, one of which is adhesive, the edges of said sheets being die-cut and sealed, substantially as described.
5. A plaster-package comprising medicament inclosed between two sheets one of which is adhesive, the edges of said sheets being die-cut, and the cut edges, only, forced into adhesive contact with each other by diepressure only.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of September, 1899.
