EDWIN M. GRANT, or HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
PENHOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,390, dated May 11, 1897. Application filed January 4:, 1897. Serial No. 617,872. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN M. GRANT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Penholders, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a side view of a penholder embodying said invention. The full lines indicate the device clasping the pen ready for use. The broken lines indicate the clamping-plate in an opened position. The scale in this view is enlarged as compared with the article as actually made for use. Fig. 2 is a bottom View of the same penholder. Fig. 3 is a view of the same penholder in cross-section on the plane indicated by the broken line zmof Fig. 1.
The object and purpose of the improvement are the production of a penholder having a construction designed to obviate that trouble which results from the pen firmly sticking in the holder of the ordinary construction after a considerable period of use.
In the accompanying drawings the letter a denotes the cylindrical body of the penholder, and 1) denotes a correspondingly -,curved clamping-plate pivotally attached to the penholder-body.
The letter 0 denotes a ring adapted to slid on the exterior of the penholder-body. When in position shown by full lines in Fig. 1, it holds the pen e firmly clamped between the penholderbody and the clamping plate.
or mortise corresponding in outline to the outline of the curved clamping-plate, so as to more or less admit such clamping-plate into that socket or mortise.
On the under side the penholder-body is provided with a stop-groove a, closed at the end farthermost removed from the pen-stock d, so as to prevent the escape of the ring at that end, the stock performing a similar service at the other end, and the ring 0 is provided with a spur 0, taking into this stop-groove.
I claim as my improvement- The improved penholder herein described, consisting of the cylindrical body or barrel, provided with a mortise-seat or depression on one side and a stop-groove or depression on the other side thereof extending beyond the clamping-platain combination with the pivotally-attached clamping-plate fitting the said mortise-seat, and the ring 0, sliding freely on the said body and clamping-plate, provided with a spur o, engaging with the said stopgroove or depression a, whereby said ring is guided and also prevented from escaping from the body or barrel, substantially as shown and described.
EDWIN M. GRANT. Witnesses:
