UNin STAT S ATENT mucn.
JOHN 1V. HAMER, OF BEVERLY, NEWV JERSEY.
TROUSERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581 ,419, dated April 27, 1897.
Application filed January 15, 1897. Serial No. 619,304:- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN WV. HAMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Burlington, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trousers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of an improved construction of trousers, the novel features of which will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the lower portion of a pair of trousers embodying my invention, showing especially forms of devices that may be employed for my purpose. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the lower portion of the trousers seen in Fig. 1, the same being shown in normal condition and adapted for walking or other purposes. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation showingthe trousers fastened around the ankle of the wearer and adapted for bicycle-riding, hunting, &c. Fig. 4 represents an inverted plan view of a trousers-leg. (Seen in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 represents a modification.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a leg of a pair of trousers, the same being slit at each side thereof from near the point B downwardly, whereby the front and rear portions 0 and D are formed, said rear portion being provided near each edge thereof with a lon gitu dinally-extendin g strip or flap E,which has the buttons F attached thereto, which are adapted to be engaged by the fastening devices G, which are located near each edge of the front portion 0, said fastening devices F G being preferably similar to glove-fastening devices now in use, although it will of course be evident that other fastening means may be employed.
H designates buttonholes extending through the outer portion K near the edges of the front portion 0 of the trousers, said buttonholes being in the present instance three in number and formed in the front portion 0 of the trousers and adapted to be engaged by the buttons J on the rear portion D, the lower but ton being set farthest from the flap E, while the other buttons are located nearer to said flap, whereby when the trousers are employed for bicycle-riding theywill be caused to tightly engage the ankle and leg of the wearer in substantially the manner seen in Fig. 3, while normally for walking, &c., they appear the same as ordinary trousers. (Indicated in Fig. 2.)
It will of course be evident that changes may be made by those skilled in the art which will come within the scope of my invention, and I do not therefore desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction I have herein shown and described, especially as to the style of the fastenings, as they may be varied, and it will, furthermore, be evident that the slits or divisional lines may be in the front and rear of the trousers-leg, or either front and rear, as seen in Fig. 5, instead of at the sides, and the fastening devices located accordingly.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A pair of trousers having a leg slit on one side fronrthe bottom upwardly forming flaps, one of said flaps having a row of members of fastening devices connected therewith, substantially parallel with its free edge, and a second row extending obliquely thereto, and the other flap having members of fasten ing devices arranged in one row and adapted to engage the members on the first-mentioned flap.
2. Apair of trousers having the legs thereof slit in each side from the bottom upwardly, forming flaps, a strip attached to one-of said flaps on each side, fastening devices common to each of said strips and the opposing flaps, whereby the latter may be caused to loosely engage the limb of the wearer, and other fastening devices attached to a flap on each side of a trousers-leg and extending obliquely, the other flap of each side being provided with members of fastening devices for engagement with the last-named fastening devices.
JOHN WT HAMER.
