WILLIAM P, I-IISCOOK, OF ITHACA, NEW YORK.
COMBINED CANE AND UIVIBRELLA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,397, dated April 13, 1897. Application filed June 29, 1896. Serial No. 597,460. (No model.)
T0 all zul/wm, t may concern.- i
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. HIsoooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ithaca, in the county of Tompkins and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Cane and Umbrella; and I dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to combined can es and umbrellas. i
My object is to provide a more simple, cheap, durable, and ornamental cane and umbrella, which may be quickly and easily manipulated to bring it into umbrella or cane form, and one whose removable parts may be stowed into compact form, so as to be easily carried in the pocket of the user.
Having this object in view, my invention consists of a hollow cane and an umbrella contained therein.
It further consists of other novel features and combinations, appearing more fully hereinatter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved combined cane and umbrella; Fig. 2, a sectional eleva tion, and Fig. 3 a sectional view showing the sections of the cane telescoped.
The cane consists of a handle l, a ferrule 2, and three hollow sections 3, 4, and 5. These sections constitute the tapering body of the cane, and they are of such construction that they may be telescoped, as shown in Fig. 3. The ferrule is provided with an annular shoulder 7. The lower end of section 5 is provided with an annular rabbet which receives shoulder 7. Section 4E rests on section 5 at the point designated by the numeral 8, while section 3 Y rests on section 4 at 9. The ends of sections i and 5 are provided with peripheral grooves in which lie respective sleeves l0 and l1, which are connected to the respective sections. The handle rests on the upper end of section 3 at the point designated lby the numeral 12, and the contiguous ends of said section and the handle are recessed and the sleeve 13 lies in said recess and is connected to section 3. These sleeves hold the sections, handle, and ferrule together in proper relation,
but in such manner that they can be easily separated and the sections telescoped to allow of the saine being carried in compact form in the pocket of the user when the cane is not being used.
The numeral 14 designates an umbrella which is provided With an umbrella-rod 15, and the upper and lower ends 16 and l7 of this rod are screw-threaded, as shown, the handle screwed over the former and the ferrule over the latter. lVhen in this position, the umbrella is snugly housed within the sections of the cane, so that it is not visible and the cane itself possesses an ornamental appearance.
If it is desired to use the umbrella only, the ferrule is unscrewed and the sections and sleeves removed and telescoped so that they can be easily carried in the pocket of the user. The ferrule is then again screwed onto the lower end of the umbrella-rod and the umbrella is ready for use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The herein-described combined cane .and umbrella comprising in its make-up hollour tapering sections placed end to end and adapted to telescope, removable independent and separate sleeves en circling the meetin g points of the sections, a ferrule, an umbrella located in the sections and connected to the ferrule, and a handle connected to said umbrella..
2. The herein-described combined cane and umbrella comprising in its make-up a number of hollow tapering sections adapted to telescope, and provided at their ends with peripheral recesses, sleeves encircling the sections at their meeting points and lyingin the recesses, an umbrella located within the sections, a ferrule screwed to the end of the umbrella and a handle screwed to the other end of the umbrella and abutting on the uppermost section.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence ot two subscribing witnesses.
VILLIAM P. HISCOCK.
