Be it known that I, CHARLES J. STABERG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Firearms, of which the following is a specilication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to firearms, and the object thereof is to provide a gun or firearm which is adapted to scatter the shot or projectiles as they leave the m uzzle thereof; and with this object in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specifica-tion, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure lis a top plan view of the end of the barrel of a gun provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, a longitudinal transverse section thereof; Fig. 3, a vertical transverse section thereof. Figs. -f and 5 are plan views of details of the scattering device.

In the drawings forming part of this specification, A represents the end of the barrel of a gun', and mounted thereon is a tubular' sleeve B, which is provided at one side with au oblong casingb, which is open at its outer end, and mounted within the oblong casing b is a plate O, the inner surface of which conforms to the surface of the barrel and the outer surface of which is convex in cross-section, and mounted in said casing and resting against or in contact with the plate O is a plate-sprin g D, the inner end of which is bent outwardly, so as to increase the power of the spring, as shown at d, and the outer end of which is provided with a loop d2, formed by bending the end of the plate.

Mounted within the oblong casing Z) is a curved spring G, one end of which projects through the side thereof, as shown at g, and the other end of which is bent to correspond with the frame of the casing B in cross-section and rests in a transverse notch or recess formed in the top thereof, and the inner end of the spring D is provided at one side with notches or recesses d3 and d4, the last of which is formed close to the end thereof and is provided with an abrupt shoulder, while the sides of the notch or recess d3 are both inclined; and by means of this construction the spring D may be withdrawn until the spring G rests in the notch or recess d4, but cannot be entirely withdrawn, and said spring D may be forced inwardly until the end d2 thereof is withdrawn, so that it will not come in contact with the projectile.

The oblong casing b may be formed integrally with the sleeve B or separately, and if formed separately it may he held in place by a set-screw M or in any desired manner; and this device is simple in construction and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and it is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

The spring g may be pulled out whenever desired, in order that the projectile-spreading spring D may also be disconnected from the casing b.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcntl. The combination with the end of the barrel of a gun, of a sleeve mounted thereon, and provided at one side with an oblong casing, the outer end of which is open and a spring which is mounted in said casing, and adapted to be adjusted therein, and the end of which projects and is curved inwardly, so as to come in contact with the projectile, substantially as shown and described.

2. rlhe combination with the end of the barrel of a gun, of a sleeve mounted thereon, and provided at one side with an oblong casing, the outer end of which is open and a spring which is mounted in said casing, and adapted to be adjusted therein, andthe end of which projects and is curved inwardly, so as to come in contact with the projectile, a transverse spring mounted therein for retaining the firstmentioned spring in place, notches formed in the sides of the casing with which the retaining-spring engages, substantially as shown and described.

the outer end of which is open and a spring which is mounted in said casing, and adapted to be adj usted therein, and the end of which projects and is curved inwardly, so as to come in contact With the projectile, a transverse sprin g mounted therein for retaining the rstmentioned spring in place, notches formed in the sides of the casing With Which the retaining-sprin g engages, and said casing being provided with a bottom plate Which conforms in cross-section to the shape of the barrel of the gun, and the adjustable projectilespreading spring being mounted on said plate and adaptn ed to slide thereon, and said plate being slightly convex longitudinally on its outer surface, substantially as shown and described.
