J. GAUT. ADJUSTABLE H-EAD BEST FOR FIREARMS.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 12, 1901. N0 MODEL.
UNITED STATES Patented September 1, 1903.
ATENT Prion.
ADJUSTABLE HEAD-=REST FOR FIREARMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 737,732, dated September 1, 1903. Application filed November 12,1901. Serial No. 82,010. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH GAUT, artist, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Renwick street, Leichhardt, Sydney, New South Wales, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Firearms; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to improvements in firearms whereby an adjustable head-rest is provided in or upon the stock of a rifle or gun for the support of the marksmans head when taking aim.
It is well known that when using existing firearms it is an advantage for the head to be supported on the stock when possible, but that for long-range shooting it becomes difficult, owing to the elevation of the gun, to bring the head to the stock without great inconvenience, with the result that a steady aim is almost impossible. To obviate this difficulty, I provide an adjustable head-rest which may be raised or lowered to suit the range or elevation of the rifle or gun and the requirements of the marksman who may be using the firearm and which when not in use will repose in the stock in such a manner that the outward shape of the stock may be generally preserved.
To facilitate explanation, drawings are annexed, of which- Figure 1 is a part sectional elevation of the stock of a rifle or gun with the head-rest elevated. Fig. 2 is a perspectiveview of the head-rest and vertical sliding rack-bar, the latter being partly exposed in a socket, as shown in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 1, A represents the stock of a firearm; a, an adjustable head-rest, of metal, wood, or other suitable material or materials, capable of fitting in the comb or upper edge of the stock. The rest a is rigidly secured to the top of a vertical sliding rack-bar h, which slides vertically in a socket 0, let into the stock, which socket is surmounted by a tube d, also let into the stock, which tube may be rigidly secured to said socket and held in position by the plate e.
The back of the vertical sliding rack-bar is recessed at f. In the tube d, on one side, a spring g holds a pin it in contact with the back of the bar 21, and in the opposite side of the tube is a tooth 2', adapted to move in the said tube and engage with the teeth on the said vertical sliding rack-bar b by means of the spring To raise the rest, it is simply lifted to any desired height, and when released the pin it forces the vertical sliding rack-bar 1) into engagement with the tooth 2', which retains it in that position. The rest may be lowered by drawing it backward toward the butt of the stock. The vertical sliding rack-bar b is disengaged from the tooth i, when the rest may be pushed back into the stock.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- 1. The combination with a firearm having a guideway extending vertically through the stock thereof, of a head-rest having a single supporting-shank depending in said guideway, said shank having a series of ratchetteeth, a pawl located in the Wall of said guideway and engaging said ratchet teeth and means whereby said pawl and teeth may be disengaged, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a firearm having a tubular guideway in the stock thereof, of a head-rest having a shank depending in said guideway, said shank having a series of ratchet-teeth, a pawl engaging said ratchetteeth and a yielding presser device bearing against the opposite side of said shank, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a firearm having a tubular guideway in the stock thereof, of a head-rest having a shank depending into the guideway, said shank having a series of ratchet-teeth on one side and a projection on the other side at its lower end, a pawl carried by the stock engaging said teeth, and a springpusher carried by said stock on the other side of the shank and bearing against the shank above the projection, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH GAUT.
