JoHN 1?. BONNER, or BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, AssIeNoR TO THE WILLIAM o. VOSBURGH MANUFACTURING COMPANY, (LIMITED,) or SAME, PLACE.
EXTENSION-SLIDE CHANDE LIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,519, dated March 25, 1884:.
Application filed July 28, 1883. (No model.)
T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN P. BONNER, of Brooklyn, Kingscounty, New York, have invented, made, and applied to use Improvements in the Construction .of ExtensionSlide Chandeliers; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and correct description of my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figu're'l is a front View of my invention.v Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of same. Fig. 3 is'across-section of same.
I 5 In the drawings like parts of the invention,
are designated by the same letters of reference.
The nature of the present invention relates to improvements, as more fully hereinafter set forth, in the construction of extensionslide chandeliers, the object of the invention being the production of an extensionslide chandelier easily operated and afforded at a low .cost to the-consumer.
To enable those skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, I will describe the same.
A shows the main or supply pipe of a gaschandelier, and B is a box, which may be attached in any suitable manner to the base or lower end of the pipe A. I
C shows the second tube or pipe for the extension-chandelier or drop-light passed through an opening in the box B in line with the poipt 5 at which the tube or pipe A is attached, and entering the tube or pipe A, within which it is free to move as required, and from which it receives its supply of gas. This tube or pipe 0 may be provided at its lower end with a burner, to which it in turn furnishes a supply of gas.
Within the box B, upon each side of the tube 0, are placed the boxes D, supportin g the journals E, having upon them the scored 5 wheels F. These scored wheels F are intended to bear upon each side of the tube 0,-and
are free to revolve as the same is drawn up.
. Upon each of the journals E a ratchet-Wheel,
G, is secured, with which the pawls H engoverned by the set-screws J, passing through the ends of the box B and bearing against the springs I.
Such being the construction, the operation will be readily understood. The tube 0 is drawn down by hand, and as it is drawn down the scored wheels F are held firmly in posi- 7 tion, bearing upon the tube G upon each side of the same, by the pawls H engaging with the ratchet-wheels G upon the journals E. At the same time the springs I cause a continual 7o pressure of the scored wheels upon the tube 0, and as these wear from friction this lost motion is taken up by manipulation of the set-screws J. As the tube 0 is retained in position by mechanical devices, it is prevented from dropping or slipping from vibration of the chandelier, of which it forms apart,
- and while the pawls engage with the ratchetwheels and prevent a revolution of the journals as the tube 0 is drawn down, this enables it to hold a great weight. Upon the upward or return movement of the tube 0 the pawls do not engage with the ratchet-wheels and the scored wheels revolve, and this upward movement of the tube is easily effected. I
Having now set forth my invention, I claim as new- In an extension-slide chandelier, the combination of the following elements: a tube, A, box B, tube 0, boxes D, scored wheels F, and ratchet-wheels G, journals E, pawls H, curved springs I, and regulating-screws J, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose specified.
JOHN. P. BONNER.
In presence of- A. SIDNEY DOANE, JOHN TAYLOR.
