SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,297, dated March 23, 1897. Application filed June 8, 1896. Serial N0. 594,735. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL F. Etrrnvonn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hitching Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the illvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and.

use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention has relation to hitching devices or ties for horses or other animals and is designed to provide a device of this character which is of simple construction and by means of which an animal may be quickly and securely tied to a post or other object and as quickly released.

With these objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates an ordinary hitchingstrap, one end of which is provided with a suitable device, such as a snap-hook B, by means of which it may be secured to. the bit or bridle ring of a harness or around an aniinals neck in the usual manner.

0 designates a plate of malleable or cast metal or any other suitable material, upon the under side of which is a central longitudinal loop or guide 0, designed to receive the The lateral edges of said plate upon its upper side are formed with flanges c, whoseupper portions are bent horizontally inward, as shown at 0 The loop 0 has a projection 0 of suitable character, which is designed to bear against the strap or force it into an opening 0 in the body of the plate to prevent its slipping.

D designates a second plate, which is fitted to slide upon the upper face of the plate 0 in the ways formed by the flanges c. This plate D has suitable means for attachment of the end portion of the strap thereto, such as the slots cl (1, and its central portion is preferably offset somewhat away from the face of the plate 0, as indicated.

The free end portion of the strap is passed through the loop or guide 0 of the plate D, and its end portion is attached to the plate D.

The connection of the strap with plate D may be a permanent one, made in any suitable manner, or, as shown,.it may be made by passing the strap through the slot (1 from the under side, thence down through the slot d and back between the two plates. This connection, it will be seen, is entirely a frictional one and has this advantage-to wit, that it permits the ready adjustment of said strap to different operative lengths, as may be required. This portion of the strap, between the point where it leaves the loop or guide 0 and enters the slot d, forms a loop, which in making a tie is slipped over or passed around the post or other object. I In tying to a post the loop can bereadily slipped over the top of the post, but in tying to atree or to any other object an end of which is not accessible the plate D is removed 'from the plate 0 and passed around the object. It is then again applied to the plate 0 and properly adjusted to draw the loop of the strap tightly around the post. The harder the animal pulls on the strap the tighter will its loop be drawn, the edge of the plate D being drawn tightly against the post or other object.

Both plates 0 and Dare tapered longitudinally, being wider at their lower or inner ends. The two plates have, therefore, a wedging action, which prevents the plate D from being unseated in the direction of the pull of the hitch-strap thereon.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination wit-h a hitch or tie strap, of a pair of plates, one of which has an endwise-sliding movement with respect to the other, one of said plates having a guide or loop through which the strap is passed, and the other plate means whereby the strap is connected thereto, substantially as specified.

2. The combination with a hitch or tie strap, of the two plates 0 and D, the plate 0 having the longitudinal loop or guide 0 and the guide-flanges c, and the plate D seated to slide between said flanges, said strap being passed through the loop or guide 0 and attached at one end portion to the plate D, substantially as specified.

3. The herein-described attachment for hitch or tie straps, comprising a tapered plate 0 having upon one side the central longitndinal offset guide or loop 0 and upon the opposite side the lateral guide-flanges c and the plate D also tapered and adapted to slide between said flanges, and having the slotted offset central portion, substantially as specified.

4. The combination with a hitch or tie strap, of the herein-described attachment therefor, consisting of the tapered plate 0, having upon one side the central offset guide or loop 0 and upon the opposite side lateral guide-flanges c, said plate having also an opening 0 and a projection on the said guide or loop opposite said opening, and a second plate, D, arranged to seat between the flanges c, and having means for the attachment of one end of the hitch or tie strap thereto, substantially as specified.
