Description

(No Model.) I
J. R.-RUEGKERT,
PLACKET FASTENER.
No. 578,946 Patented Mar. 16, 1897'.
"cams versus no. PNGTD-LITNOM wnsums'ron, 0,1:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN R. RUEOKERT, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
PLACKET-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,946, dated March 16, 1897.
Application filed July 16, 1896. Serial No.- 599 .S62. (N0 model.)
In all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHN ROBERT RUEcK- ERT, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Placket Fasteners for Skirts, of which the following is a specification.
In the description of the said invention which follows reference is made to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which Figure 1 is a rear view of a portion of a skirt, showing the placket and its fastener, the placket being open. Fig. 2 is a similar View, except that the skirt is not shown. Fig. 3 is a front View of the placket-fastener, which is shown as closed. Fig. 4 is an edge View of the upper end of one member of the fastener. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the other member. Fig. 6 is an edge view of the lower end of both members of the device. Fig. 7 is a top view of Fig. 5.
Referring now to the drawings, A is the skirt, and a the band thereof.
B is the placket of the skirt.
0 and D are the two members of the placketfastener,-consisting of strips of spring metal, preferably hard brass or steel. These are pivoted together at their ends by means of an eyelet c.
The upper and lower ends of the members C and D are provided with holes d, whereby the device is attached by stitches to the sides or edges of the placket.
The fastener is secured with one member thereof on the outside and the other in the inside of the skirt, so that when the placket is closed the fastener is between the overlapping edges of the skirt.
To secure the fastener when closed and also attach together the ends of the skirt-band, the
portion 6 of the member G is thrown out or raised, so as to produce a space behind it or between it and the skirt-band; and the member D is provided with a hook f integral therewith adapted to engage with the oifset portion of the member 0, as shown in Fig. 3. By
this construction a cheap and simple locking device is produced without the addition of any parts to the members 0 and D.
In order that the skirt may be gathered up by hand and pulled sidewise, as is practiced in crossing damp and muddy places, the fastener is made to "move with the skirt below the band. (See Fig. 3.) This is effected by making the members 0 and'D each in two parts jointed together below the band. (See Fig. 1.)
By jointing the members below the band no strain is placed on the band in the moVe-. ment of the skirt described. The joints-are preferably made with eyelets g.
The fastener may be used plain, as shown, or covered with some textile fabric.
I claim as my invention-'- A placket-fastener which consists of two strips of metal hinged together at their lower ends and adapted one to overlap the other when the device is closed, the said strips being in two jointed sections, the joints registering when the device is closed and coming immediately below the band of the skirt to which the device is applied, and one short or upper section provided with a hook, and the other section bent so as to produce an ofiset fitted to engage with the said hook, substantially as specified.
- JOHN R. RUECKERT.
