' G. GULDEN, Jr. PACKAGE FOR MUSTARD, &c.
Patented Mar. 16,1897.
M M I m w) ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES GULDEN, JR., OF NEYV YORK, N. Y.
PACKAGE FOR MUSTARD, aw.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,920, dated March 16, 1897.
Application filed June 9,1896. Serial No. 594,825. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES GULDEN, J r., residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packages for Mustard or the Like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to packages for mustard and the like, and has for its object to improve the construction described in United States Letters Patent No. 271,237, dated January 30, 1883, and issued to Charles Gulden.
To this end my invention consists in the construction hereinafter set forth and claimed.
My invention will be understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, in Wl1lGh- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a bottle and stopperembodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View of a cap or stopper, showing the same separate from the bottle for the purposes of clearer illustration. Fig. 3 is an underneath plan View of the cap; and Fig. 4 is an edge detail sectional View on an enlarged scale, the section being taken on the line at 4 of Fig. 3.
Referring particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, 1 is a concave spring-clasp of circular form adapted to fit over the lip 2 of a bottle Aand to embrace the same for a considerable portion of its periphery. Hinged to this springclasp is a cap 3, which goes over the mouth of the bottle and is provided with a lip or latch 4 for engaging the lip or rim of a bottlemouth and apertured at its edge, as at 8. These parts are made of sheet metal. In order to effect a more secure closure, the cap 3 is provided on its inside with a sealing-disk 5, of cork or other analogous material the equivalent of cork, which sealing-disk is held in place by slitting the rear edge of the cap 3 and throwing down lugs or projections 6,
whose edges bind the rear edge of the sealing-disk, so as to hold it firmly in place, leaving the front edge 8 thereof free.
It will be noted that the cap or cover 3 is arch-shaped and leaves a clear space 7 be tween the top face of the sealing-disk and the curved or arched cap or cover 3.
It will be obvious that the disk 5 will be retained in the cap or cover by the lugs 6, but maybe removed therefrom by seizing the said disk by its front edge and pulling it out of the cap, whereupon the aperture 8 will be free and unobstructed for the insertion of a spoon, so that when the package is shipped filled with mustard the disk 5 will serve to confine the said mustard in the bottle, rendering it unnecessary to cork up the said bottle bya separate cork, and when it is desired to use-the mustard the disk may be pulled away from its fastenings in the cap and the mustard-spoon inserted through the aperture 8 in the cap.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a package for mustard or analogous article of commerce, the combination of a bottle A having a lip 2, a concave arched springclasped member 1 partially surrounding the said lip and removable therefrom, a lid or cover 3 hinged to the said part 1 and provided with a clasp at and an apertures for the passage of a spoon and a sealing-disk of cork or analogous material located beneath the cover and lugs or cars 6 thrown down from the cover and securing the said disk to the lid or cover by its rear edges only, substantially as described.
