SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,857, dated March 2, 189?.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS CHARLES Hoo- MAN, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Ditton, near Maidstone, in the county of Kent, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Casks or Barrels for Containing Cement or the Like, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 19,596,1)earing date October 15, 1895,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in or connected with casks or barrels for containing cement or the like, and refers to the construction of and mode of fastening the heads of such casks or barrels.
In accordance with this invention the said heads are formed of any suitable metal stru ck or turned up at the edge to form a raised rim. This is then bent over and brought down to form a depending flange, which when the head is in position surrounds and embraces the tops of the barrel-staves, the said tops entering the recess formed by the raised edge of the head and the depending iiange. Metal or other hoops or bands are forced over the heads of cask or barrel when such heads are in position and suitably secured so that the said hoops or bands will tightly encircle the iiange or depending edges of the raised rim formed on the head and firmly maintain the latter in place; and in order that this my in vention may be fully understood and readily carried into effect I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon-that is to say:

The recess formed between the raised rim b and the ange h2 fits over (when the head is placed in position) the tops of the staves or end of the cask or barrel a and is there firmly secured by the hoops or bands c, which are forced over the heads of the cask or barrel and there suitably secured, tightly encircling the depending iiange h of the head aforesaid.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A cask or barrel for containing cement or the like, having the head ZJ, of a suitable metal provided with a raised rim Z9 and depending iiange b2, with space between, in combination with means for securely aftixing the head in position, which means consist of the hoops or bands c, tightly encircling the iiange b2 of the head h, all substantially as herein described and shown.
