(.IEORGE R. KING, OF NEW 'YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO J. B. KING 6: (10. A ObRPORATION OF NEW YORK.
I BABREL-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1909.
Application filed October 7, 1908. Serial No. 466,693.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE R. KING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, county of Richmond, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Barrel-Fasten-. ers, of whirh the following is a. specification.
I The object of my invention is to provide a means for more securely fastening heads in barrels; and it consists in a fastener which will secure the head to the nearest hoop in such a manner that the head cannot be removed without first removing the hoop.
This object is oreompl'ished by my invention, rel-tam emhmluuonts of which will be de-.
scribed below. i
For a more particular descri ition ofmy invention, reference is to be har to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a barrel provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, looking in the direr-tion of the arrows. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a modification. Fig. 4 is a per spective view of a fastener.
Throughout the various views of the drawings, similar reference characters designate similar parts.
My improved fastener 1 may be applied to any suitable barrel 2, with a head 3. anda hoop 4 adjacent to said head.
In the illustrated embodiment of my invention, the fastener 1 consists of a metal band having a flat portion 5 and anchoring ends. The ends are formed by bending the hand u wardly and outwardly as at 6, then upwarr y and inwardly at 7 so as to fit snug against the head I; and thence upwardl at a. less acute angle to form parts 8 whic run againstthe interior of the sta'ves and from thenee outwardly to form a part 9 adapted to lit against the ends of the staves and thence downwardly and outward] to form ap'ortion 10 which is adapted to lie )etween the staves of the barreland the hoops 1 and at their lower ends the parts 10 are providedwith hooks 11 which are adapted to engage the hoop 4 as shown. These anchoring ends may be otherwise conformed to meet the requirements of special constructions of barrel heads.
The fasteners 1 may extend diametrically, across the head as shown in Fi s. 1 and 2', the rentersbeingsuitably0H set,w ennecessa 56 to permit crossing as shownin Fig. 2, or t e fasten crs 1 may he placed as cords, as shown in Fig. 3. In either instance the are se-j cured to the head 3 by means 0 suitable nails or screws 12.
When my improved fastener is used, the barrel head 3 is inserted in the barrel 2 in the conventional manner, and then the. ends of the fasteners proect and enga' e the staves of the barrel 2 as s own. The 00p 4 is then 615 driven home and en ages the parts IO-and the hooks ll of the astene'rs 1, thereby'fix ing the head in place suhject to the removalof the hoop 4; The hoop 4 is then secured. by nails, or other suitable-means, not shown. When the head 3 is to be removed,'the re 3 verse operation takes lace, that is the hoop 4 is first removed and t on the hea 3 'may be withdrawn as usual.
While I have shown and described various embodiments of my invention, it is obvious that it is not restricted thereto, but is broad enough to cover all structures that come with in the scope of the annexed claim. 1
What I claim is: In a device of the elass desoribed, a head and a band secured to the under face thereof and insertible and removable therewith, said band having adjacent its ends integral I therewith oppositely inclined gage the chime of a barrel. an inclined portions to receive and embrace the inner and outer faces and ends of stoves and hook terminals to receive and embrace a-h'oop.
