SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,590, dated February 23, 1897.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALFRED TURNER, acitizen of the United States, residing at Hortons, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to-make and use the same.

My invention relates to non-refillable bottles.

My object is to provide an improved and cheap as well as simple bottle which will not allow of the contents of the bottle being obtained Without fracturing some parts thereof, so that should the bottle be refilled the fraud will at once be apparent to the customer.

Having this object in view, my invention consists in combination, with a bottle-neck provided with ears or lugs of novel and improved construction, of a cap also provided with ears, the ears on the cap and neck being adapted to be fused together after the bottle has been filled, as will appear more fully hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved bottle and cap prior to fusion of the lugs or cars; Fig. 2, a plan view thereof; Fig. 3, a side elevation of a modified form of bottle and cap; Fig. 4, a side elevation taken at right angles to the view shown in Fig. 3; and Figs. 5 and 6 like views, respectively, as Figs. 3 and 4:, showing another modification.

Referring now to Figs. 1 and 2, the numeral 1 designates the neck of the bottle, which is provided with a head 2. Formed integral with this head and located diametrically opposite are two ears 3 and 4, each of which has an arrow-shaped head 5 and a reduced neck 6. The reduced portion is provided, so that the ears can be readily broken off when necessary.

My improved cap is designated by numeral 7 and fits over the head of the neck. This cap is provided with sets of diametrically the sides of the arrow-shaped heads of the ears, formed integral with the head of the neck. The reduced portions 10 are provided, so that these lugs will be rendered easily frangible at this point.

An ordinary stopper is designated by the numeral 11, and 12 is a small chain which is connected to the stopper and extends around the neck, as shown, said chain being employed so that the stopper will be always with the bottle after the latter has been unsealed.

My improved bottle is sealed in the following manner: After the bottle has been filled and corked heat is applied to the ears on the neck and cap, and they are fused together, thereby sealing the cap in position and satisfactorily preventing the bottle from being opened Without fracturing the ears at their reduced portions or necks. When it is desirable to open a bottle, a light tap must be applied to the fused lugs or ears, whereupon they will break and the cap can be removed and the bottle uncorked. The fractured ears of the neck will at once indicate to the customer the fraud sought to be practiced upon him should the bottle be again filled and placed on sale.

Referring now to the modified structure shown in Figs. 3 and 4:, in this instance instead of having the ears or lugs extend horizontally they extend vertically. The numerals 13 designate ears which are formed integral with the head of the neck; but these are not made in the arrow shape shown in Figs.

1 and 2, but they are quite narrow, being provided with a reduced neck 14. On each side of the cap are located integral upwardly-projecting ears 15, which have reduced necks 16, and these ears taper somewhat, as also do the ears 13, and when the cap is in position they lie close to the latter ears. The ears are fused together, as before described.

Referring now to the modified form shown in Figs. 5 and 6, in this instance the ears of the head of the neck extend downwardly, as at 17, and they are made in the shape of an arrow-head, being provided with a reduced neck 18. The numerals 19 designate inclined somewhat tapering ears which are formed integral with the cap and lie next ears 17.

Slight and immaterial changes of construc- The tion might be resorted to without departing from any of the advantages of my invention, as, for instance, the sets of ears might be made to project at other degrees of inclination than those shown and described in the drawings, and they might also be made in other shapes, and hence it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise con struction herein shown and described, but consider that I am entitled to all such variations as come within the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. 111 a non-refillable bottle, the combination with a bottle-neck provided with a lug, of a cap for said neck which is provided with a lug or ear, said lugs or cars being adapted for fusing together.

2. In a non-refillable bottle, the combination with a bottle-neck provided with a lug or car having a reduced or easily-frangible portion, of a cap for said neck which is provided with an ear also having a reduced portion, said ears being adapted for fusing together.

3. In a non-refillable bottle, the combination with a bottle-neck provided with a lug or ear, of a cork or stopper located in the neck, and an upper cap which covers the stopper, said cap being provided with a lug or ear, said ears being adapted for fusing together.

4. In a non-refillable bottle, the combination with a bottle-neck provided with a lug or ear, of a cork or stopper located in the neck, a chain connecting said stopper with the neck, and a cap covering the stopper and provided with a lug or ear, said ears being adapted for fusing together.
