Description
(No Model.) Y Y M. J.'& R. E. CARVER.
` GOT 0R BED.
UNITED STATES ATRNT Fricn.
MARY J. CARVER AND RHODA E. CARVER, OF NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
COT OR BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,419, dated February 23, 1897.
Application led February 24, 1896. Renewed January 21, 1897. Serial No. 620,155. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that We, MARY J. CARVER an RHODA E. CARVER, citizens of the United- States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cots or Beds; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description'of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in cots or beds, and has special reference to a cot or bed adapted for use in hospitals or the sick-room for invalids.
One object of our invention is the provision of a cot or bed which can be supported upon the floor or suspended from the ceiling, as circumstances require.
Another object of our invention is the provision of a cot or bed which Will be light in weight, but possess great strength and durability, and 'which can be adjusted to suit the patient and render the same comfortable and also have such conveniences as a patient requires.
Another object of our invention is the provision of a bed or cot which can be adj usted t0 the size of a child or adult and to cause the same to be compact and easily to be stored or transported and which will be simple and in. expensive in construction.
To attain the desired objects, the invention consists of a cot or bed embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure l represents a perspective View of our cot or bed as a hanging or suspended device. Fig. 2 represents a similar view with the cot resting on the floor. Fig. 3 represents a sectional detail view to clearly show the manner of adjusting the cot longitudinally. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on line .fr Fig. 3. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views of one of the flexible slats or strips.
Referring by letter to the drawings, the frame of our cot consists of the end rails A, the side rails B having their outer ends secured to the end rails, and the rails are rendered longitudinally adjustable by means of the tongue-and-groove connection C and are sustained at t-he proper point or adjustment by means of the clips or bands D, and the frame is supported upon hinged legs E, having springs F for closing them when not in use. By this means we provide a bed which can be quickly adjusted to a child or adult and which also will occupy a small amount of space. Upon one of the side rails of the cot is provided a series of studs or lugs G, with which engages the series of openings H, provided in the flexible slats or strips J, which have their other edge fastened at K to the other rail, and we also providean opening L in one of the strips for the convenience of the patients and, further, provide the hinged headrest M, having a detent or dog N for engaging a rack O for adjusting the head of the patient. From this construction it will be noticed that the strips may be adjusted to suit the comfort of the patient and that the head may be adj usted.
lVhen desired to suspend the cot from the ceiling, we provide at each end of the frame the loops P, having their ends connected to a single ring Q upon a pulley-sheave R', over which and a similar sheave R' passes a rope S, and to the ring R" of the sheave R We connect the adjusted cord T, having one end rigidly connected to a ring U, secured to the ceiling, and by this construction We can lift the bed up out of the way when not in use, and when desired to use the bed it can be quickly lowered, and this is an important feature of our invention.
Itis evident that we provide a cot or bed which is practical and specially desirable for use in the hospital or sick-room.
We claiml. The cot or bed consisting of the frame, the adjustable head-rest at one end of` the frame, the adjustable strips carried by the frame one having the opening provided with a flap, the legs hinged to the corners of the frame, and the adjustable suspending devices connected to the frame.
2. The cot or bed consisting of the frame, In Iestilnony whereof We afx our signathe suspending devices connected to the tures in presence of two Witnesses. frame, the adjustable head-rest at one end l A of the frame, the adjustable strips carried by 5 the frame, one having the opening covered by the Hap, the legs hinged to the corners of lVitnesses: the frame and the springs for holding the legs J. H. WILES, J r. when closed. J. D. ANDREWs.
