To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CURTIS HOLLAND, of Millis, county of Norfolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Illuminated Signs, of whichthe following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a speciiication, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention relates to illuminated signs for advertising and other purposes, and has for its object to construct a sign that may be applied to or connected with an ordinary incandescent electric lamp and may be readily changed at will.

In accordance with this invention a frame or holder is constructed and arranged to be applied to an ordinary incandescent electric lamp, as, for instance, it may be detachably connected with the socket thereof; and said frame or holder has jaws which are adapted to engage and hold a sign-plate bearing any suitable letter or letters or characters which it is desired to display, said sign-plate being thereby detachably connected with its frame or holder.

Figure 1 shows in side elevation an illuminated sign embodying this invention, showing two sign-plates located at opposite sides of an ordinary incandescent electric lamp 5 Fig. 2, a right-hand side view of the illuminated sign shown in Fig. l; Fig. 3, a side view of the .modified form of illuminated sign, showing the sign-plate arranged at the end instead of at the side of an ordinary incandescent electric lamp; Fig. 4, a right-hand side view of the illuminated sign shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 5, a face view of the sign-plate shown in Fig. 3.

Referring to Fig. l, a clamp-like ring or collar c is made to encircle the socket b of an ordinary incandescent electric lamp, and said ring or collar ct has connected with it a frame or holder for the sign-plate d.

The frame or holder is herein represented as made of wire, it having an upper and a lower spring-acting portion, as c c', each formed or provided with hooks c2, which engage the upper and lower edges of the signplate d. This frame or holder may be made 5 o of a single piece of wire and is so herein shown,

the spring-acting loop-like portion c' being form ed at the middle of the Wire and arranged more or less vertically and overturned upon itself at the end to present a hook c2 to receive or engage the lower edge of the sign-plate, and the ends of'said wire are bent outwardly, as at c, and formed at the ends with hooks o2 to engage the upper edge of the plate d; The upper and lower spring acting portions c o thus formed, itwill be seen, may be easily sprung apart to remove a sigh-plate CZ in order that another may be substituted for it.

The sign-plate frame or holder may be connected with the collar or ring a in different ways, but for simplicity of construction I have herein formed the ring or collar with several projections a', which may lbe turned over upon and adapted to embrace the wires and thereby hold the frame.

The frame or holder thus described supports the sign-plate d at the side of the incandescent lamp, and, if desired, there may be several such frames or holders provided, two being herein shown.

When it is desired to support the signplate d at the end of the lamp instead of at the side, the frame or holder, such, for instance, as represented in Figs. 3 to 5, may be employed, it comprising two spring-acting jaws e e', attached to or connected with the ring or collar. c, and when made of wire it may comprise two loop-like structures, each formed at the end-with hooks or hooked portions which engage the opposite edges of the sign-plate d. Therefore I do not desire to limit my invention to any particular form or construction of frame or holder for the sign-plates, so long as it is made to hold them in tion to the lamps at the side or end.

By attaching the sign-plate frame or holder to a ring or collar applied to or tted upon the socket of the lamp it will be seen that the lamp itself may be removed from the socket and another substituted whenever desired without removingthe frame or holder, and in this connection it will be seen, by referring to Fig. 1, that the lamp itself may be removed from the socket without removing either the frame or holder or the sign-plate held by it, While in Fig. 3 the frame or holder can be made long enough to enable this same result to be accomplished.

5. The combination with the socket of an incandescent electric lamp, of a iframe or holder detachably connected therewith, haV- ing jaws adapted to hold a sign-plate before the lamp, substantially as described.

6. The combination with the socket of an incandescent electric lamp, of a frame or holder detachably connected therewith, having a pair of jaws at one side of the lalnp and a sign-plate'held by said jaws before the lamp, substantially as described.

7. The cla1np-ring a adapted to be applied to the socket of an incandescent electric lamp, anda frame or holder connected with it haw ing jaws fornied with hooked ends, and a sign plate CZ engaged and held by said jaws, substantially as described.
