To all whom it my concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN S. WALLIOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Newspaper- Holders, of which; the following is a specification.

This invention relates' to ;'a holding device and more particularly to the class of newsv paper holders.

e primary object of the invention is the provision of a holder of this character. wherein the same can convenient point, either upon a porch post, a door-frame, window-frame, or other support, so that the same will be in a convenient position for the insertion of newspapers or the like therein, whereby the same will be heldto avoid the accidental slipping of the paper or papers therefrom and thereby eliminate the necessity of the newspaper carrier or distributer throwing the newspaper upon the door-step or the porch as is usual which results in the blowing of the paper therefrom and the consequent loss of the same.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a holder of this character which is novel in construction to adapt the same particularly for use in rural districts as it is squall adaptable for receiving mail matter aside rom the use thereof to receive newspapers or the like, the holder bein convenient and is readily mounted at t e desired locality for free accessibilty to amail carrier or newspapler distributerand when in use will avoid t e accidental loss of mail matter or newspaper therefrom;

A further object of the invention is the revision of a holder of this character, wherein the resilient clip is mounted and engaged with the base adapted for detachable connection to a support without the necessity of the use of separate fasteners for eeengagement of the resilient clip upon the base, the clip being mounted in and on the base in a novel manner so that newspapers or mail matter can be readily introduced therein and will be ositively meld thereby.

holder comprises a base A and a resilient clip B, the base bein preferably in the form of a block 5 of Sn stantially rectangular shape and made from wood,"although the same may be made from any suitable material and also may be of any other shape One end of the block 5 is outwardly tapered, both at the side ed es and at the front face thereof, the front ace presenting a beveled portion 6 for a distance of its extent for a parts throughout the several purpose presently described. The opposite end of the block 5 contiguous to the side edges thereof has formed therein slots or notches 7 which are parallel with each other and extend into the blocka predetermined distance and open through the said end ed e within the rear face of the block intermefi disposition of each slot 7 is a socket 8 which together with said slot 7 are fora purpose The resilient cli B is formed from a single strand of relatively stiff wire yet having the desired resiliency, and this wire is bent intermediate its end portions to form a substantially M-shaped jaw constituting dual gripping fingers 9 which confront the'front face of the block 5 while said-wire is further bent to provide coils orconvolutions 10 and hook extremities 11, which latter extend up- 'ate the ends thereof coincidentto the vertical 'wardly from the coils 10 and by the tension 1 thereof are directed toward the jaw oonstiv i ping fingers 9 will be disposed at the front side of the block and against the front face thereof, while the hook extremities 11 will be disposed against the rear face of said block 5 and detachably engaged in the sockets 8, thus in this manner the clip will be detachably fastened upon the base A and when the latter is a plied to a support, for example as the in Fig. 3, the hook extremities 11 will be positively held engaged in the sockets 8 in said block 5 without the use of separate fasteners and the coils 10 .will be confined within the slots or notches 7 in said block 5, yet will be free to yield on theopening or closing of the fingers 9 of the clip B.

The fingers 9 are slightly inwardly curved so that the tips 12 thereof will be flared outwardly from the beveled surface 6 of the block, thus affording a wide entrance gap between the block 5 and the jaw constituting the fingers 9' for the convenient introduction of newspapers or mail matter to be gripped by said fingers 9 of the jaw and retained in the holder. The block 5 is provided with suitable fastener receiving holes D so that it may be detachably secured to a support.

It will be obvious that the base A and clip B can be assembled with despatch and the same connected together without the use of separate fasteners, it being seen that when the block 5 forming the base of the holder is applied to a support there is nopossibility of the separation of the clip B from said base and the tension exerted by the coils 10 upon the jaw forming the fingers 9 will assure the positive grlpping action of the latter upon newspapers, mail matter, or the like when introduced between the block 5 and the clip B for the positive holding thereof.

From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the holder will beclearly understood and thereseated within the notches causing the said jaw and hooked extremities to exert tension on the base plate.

2. A holder of the character described comprising a substantially flat base plate having spaced notches in one end thereof and beveled at its opposite end, a detachable resilient clip forming a substantially M- shaped jaw and hooked extremities engaged in recesses in the back of said plate, spring coils formed inthe clip between the jaw and the hooked extremities, .said coils being seated within the notches causing the jaw and hooked extremities to exert tension on the base plate.

3. A holder of the character described comprising. a base having notches opening through one end and sockets in its rear face, a' resilient detachable clip formed from a single length of'wire bent to provide a jaw constituting plural fingers, and hook extremities, saidv wire being further bent to form spring coils between the jaw and said hook extremities and adapted to be confined within the notches in said base with the hook extremities engaged in the sockets in the rear face thereof while the fingers will overlie the front face ofsaid base, said base be.- ing formed with a beveled surface for a portion of its front face, the fingers being outwardly extended from the beveled face to provide a flared entrance between the latter and said fingers.
