This invention relates to resilient holders or clamps and more particularly to a holder which is adapted for use in holding folded newspapers.
An object of this invention is to provide a resilient holder which may be secured to a door sill or other portion of the building in a convenient location where it may be readily available to a newspaper carrier or the like and at the same time convenient to the occupant of the house for receiving a folded newspaper, the device being adapted to securely hold the newspaper so as to prevent blowing away by wind or the like.
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described in and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein a Figure 1 is a detailfront elevation of a device constructed according to the preferred embodiment of this invention, and
Figure 2 is a detail side elevation of the device.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates a supporting member or board which is rectangular in construction and may be of any desired length,
' the supporting member 10 being provided with spaced apertures 11 therethrough by means of whichthe board 10 may be secured to a portion of the building or porch by means of screws, bolts or the like.
At the present time when newspapers or the like are being delivered by carriers, the newspapers are thrown or otherwise deposited on the porch or other portion of the building and the newspapers are usually blown away by the wind in view of the fact that there ,is nothing available for removably securing the paperon the building. In order to securely hold the newspaper in desired position I have provided a resilient clamping member generally designated as 12 which is adapted to besecured to the supporting member 10 by means of screws or bolts 13 or'the like. The clamping member or holder 12-is 'constructed of resilient metal and isprovided o vwith a base po'rtion 14 anda looped lower end portion I5"which extends outwardly from the supporting member 10 and the" free end of the clamp 12 extends upwardly and inwardly toward the sup-porting member 10 as at 16, and the upper end of the free leg of the clamp 12 is bent outwardly as at 17 so that a newspaper or the like may be pushed downwardly along the outer face of the supporting member 10 and force the clamping member 12 outwardly, the tension of the clamping member being adapted to hold the package of paper upon the supporting member 10.
The inner or fixed end 14 of the clamp 12 is provided with a beveled upper end portion 18 which extends outwardly a slight degree from the board 10, the upper end of the fixed portion 14 being adapted to engage against the board 10 so that the body of the clamp 12 will not injure or impede the placement of a newspaper therein.
In-the use of this device, the newspaper is adapted to be folded so as to present a relatively small package and the package may then be pushed downwardly'on the supporting member 10, the downward movement of the package forcing the free end 17 outwardly and placing the clamp 12 un der tension ,so as to prevent blowing away of the paper by wind or the like.
It will be obvious from the foregoing that a relatively simple and practical clamp has been provided by means of which the newspaper may be removably positioned on the device and it will be obvious that the clamp herein disclosed may be constructed in any desired manner, having a pleasing appearance, and may be mounted at any convenient location, the location being not only con- 1 venient to the distributer of the newspapers but also to the recipient of the papers.
It will, of course, be understood that various changes and modifications may be made in' the details of construction and de- 5 sign of the above specifically described embodiment of the invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claim What is claimed is An article holder of the character described, comprising a relatively wide body portion a looped resilient clamping member secured to said body portion and extending upwardly therefrom, said clamping member terminating in an outwardly diverging portion whereby to facilitate insertion of an article within the clamp, the opposite sides of said body portion extending outwardly beyond the marginal edges ,of said clamping member and having apertures therethrough, and means extending through said apertures for securing the body portion on a supporting structure, said body portion having a beveled edge portion extending transversely of said clamping member and positioned inwardly of the free end of said clamping member.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
HARRY D. SMILEY.
