Be it known that I, CHARLES IV. LONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Miamisburg, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tops; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forma part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements inv Y toys, with specific reference to spinning-tops.

rIhe object of the invention is to provide a top that while spinning gives forth a shrill whistling noise as distinct from a humming noise, and which is audible for a considerable distance. Among the advantages possessed by this specific form of top may be mentioned the changing of the ordinary wooden top into a top which gives forth a distinct whistlin g noise during the entire time it is in motion.

To this end the invention consists of a construction that will behereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings, of which Figure l is an elevation of a top made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line cc and Fig. 3 is a `section on the line y fJ.

For the purposes of my invention an ordinary wooden top such as is commonly used will answer. In the portion a, which is the greatest cross-sectional diameter of the top, I bore an opening d on a horizontal line to the vertical center of the top and of a depth substantially as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

These various currents merge into one on ahorizontal plane with the widest portion of the top and at some distance therefrom. If the said chamber were placedin the widest diameter of the top, it will be readily' seen that the suction created by the departing current of air at that point would prevent the emission of any sound; or if the said chamber were placed in the top above the widest diameter owing to the rounded form of said upper portion the downward current of air would leave the top on a tangent without affecting the open# ing; but the chamber being below the widest diameter and entering on an upward incline the upward current of air comes in direct contact with the opening. The Weight of air within the chambers and the weight of the plugs c and c are sufficient to compensate for the weight of the material removed from the top in forming the chambers. the top is evenly balanced and will spin properly.

c' is a second plug or cap which closes the mouth of bore b, and which also conforms to the outer surface of the top. This cap c has a piece cut out of its edge which provides an opening or port e, communicating with the elbow-chamber. The arrangement and construction of the openings, as described above, are essential and weredetermined upon after long experimental effort to obtain the desired sound.

The top is spun in the usual manner, and during the rapid revolutions thereof the full force of air passes over the opening e and causes the whistling sound mentioned.
