Description

.ATEI FFICEQ JOHN J. IIENNESSY, OF NENV KENSINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPINNING TOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 695,930, dated March 25, 1902.
Application filed May 11,1901. Serial No. 59,759. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN JAMES HENNESSY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Kensington, county of Westmoreland, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spinning-Tops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts;
This invention relates toimprovements in spinning-tops of the character adapted to automatically produce a musical or whistling sound while spinning; and the object thereof is to provide a device of this character which is durable, inexpensive, and continuously effective in general operation.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved top; Fig. 2, a side elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 a vertical sectional elevation taken on a line as w of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention I employ primarily a solid wooden body of the ordinary conical or approximating conical contour and having a metallic spur or point 1 to bear the impact and contact with a surface during the operation of spinning the top. Formed in the center of the top at its upper part is a cylindrical recess a, having a concave lower surface a and an annular groove a Extending downwardly from this said recess is a cylindrical channel B, which leads in a vertical direction approximately to the center of the top and communicates with a plurality of radially-extended air passages b. Secured within the recess a is a whistle O, which embodies the apertured convex disks 0 c. This whistle is securely held in place by means of the spring-metal split ring D, which engages the groove a of the recess a and contacts with the upper surface of the whistle 0, whereby said whistle is securely retained within the recess a and is not liable to be displaced by the operation of spinning the top. I
In the operation and use of the invention the top is spun by means of a cord in the usual and well-known manner, and while the top is spinning air passing through the whistle O and the air-passages B and 1) causes the whistle to automatically produce a sound.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, a top having a vertical central opening, a plurality of radial openings leading therefrom through the sides of the top, a vertical central recess communicating with the said vertical central opening and having a concaved bottom and an annular groove, the bottom of said recess adapted to engage a whistle havinga convex surface, and the annular groove adapted to engage a fastening device for securing the whistle,substantiallyhs shown and described.
2. The combination, with a top having a vertical central opening, a plurality of radial openings leading outwardly therefrom, a vertical central cylindrical recess communicating with the said opening and which has a concave bottom and an annular groove, of a whistle embodying two convex disks secured together at their meeting edges, and a springfastener engaging partly within the said annular groove and partly over the top edge of the whistle, whereby said whistle cannot be shaken out of place and it is located for protection with' its top surface below the upper surface of the top-body, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with the top A, having the vertical central opening B, and a plurality of radial openings 1), leading outwardly therefrom, the cylindrical recess a, having the concave bottom a',and the annular groove (0 of a hollow whistle embodying two convex disks centrally pierced and secured to each other at their periphery and fitting snugly within the bottom of the recess, and means embodying a split ring engaging within the groove and over the edge of the whistle to keep said whistle securely in place, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name,in presence of two witnesses, this 30th day of April, 1901.
JOHN J. HENNESSY.
