device which may be readily applied to and removed from any box having a hinged lid and which in its applied position is capable of retaining such hinged lid at any desired angle with relation to the box proper and which is also capable of receiving, clasping, and holding a display or price card or ticket in prominent position.

The invention also contemplates forming such device from a single piece of spring-Wire, thus enabling the same to be manufactured rapidly and in large quantities at a minimum amount of cost.

' The invention consists in certain novel features and details of construction whereby advantages in point of simplicity, adaptability, and ease of application are attained, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and finally embodied in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View, illustrating the application of the improved holding device, a portion of the box-lid being broken away and dotted in to better illustrate the relation of the holding device thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the holding device. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a portion of a box and lid, showing the applied position of the holder.

Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.

The combined box-lid and display-card holder contemplated in this invention is formed from a single wire blank which is bent at its central portion to form an open loop 1, comprising parallel arms 2. The forward arm is given one complete twist or circular bend to form a coil 3 and is then extended again in the same direction with the arm 2, after which the wire is bent to form a substantially triangular or expanded pressure-foot 4, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear. After forming the pressure-foot the terminal of the blank is extended in the direction of the open loop 1, and the extremity thereof is formed with a coil 5, which rests against one side of the coil 3 and is pressed firmly against the latter by reason of the natural spring and resiliency of the material from which the device is constructed. The other terminal of the blank is bent at right angles to the rear arm 2 of the open loop and then given a second bend and projected in parallelism to such arm 2, as indicated at 6, and said arm 6 is extended sufficiently to pass beyond the edge of the box-lid, as shown in Fig. 1, where it is bent at 7 and extended at right angles to the portion 6 to form an adjusting arm or brace 8, the extremity of which is deflected at right angles thereto and pointed or sharpened to enter the end or corner of the box proper, as shown in Fig. 1.

In applying the improved holding device to a cigar-box, for instance, the open loop 1 is passed over the edge or end of the lid, so that the arms 2 will clasp said lid with springpressure. The lid is now adjusted so as to bring it to the desired angle with relation to the box, after which the pointed extremity of the arm or brace 8 is pressed into the end of the box, thus holding the lid at the desired angle. A display-card or price-ticket 9 may now be introduced either between the coils 3 and 5 or interposed beneath the pressure-foot 4, where it will be within sight of a customer. Where the lid of the box is disposed in a horizontal plane, the price-card will probably be inserted between the coils 3 and 5, and where said lid is disposed in a more nearly vertical plane said card or ticket will be inserted beneath the pressure-foot 4, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1. It will thus be seen that the box-lid is held at such an angle that the illuminated label upon the inner face of said lid will be retained in plain sight, thus constituting an advantage over any device in which it is necessary to bend the box-lid all the way back until it rests against the rear side of the box. This also avoids the necessity for injuring or destroying the hinged connection of the lid and enables the dealer to use the box for a considerable period of time.

The device is very simple and inexpensive in construction, may be manufactured with great rapidity and at a minimum cost, and may be easily and quickly applied and removed.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is

The herein-described combined box-lid and display-card holder, made from a single Wire blank bent at its central portion to form substantially parallel spring-arms adapted to embrace and clasp the box-lid, one of the terminals of said blank being twisted to form a coil 3 adjacent to the end of one of said spring-arms, after which said terminal is extended longitudinally and recurved upon itself and then provided at its extremity with a coil 5i'esting against and alining with the said coil 3, the said coils 3 and 5 being adapted to receive and clasp a card between them, the other terminal of said blank being extended substantially at right angles to the said spring-arms and being provided with an inbent pointed extremity which may be inserted in the box for holding the lid at the desired angle of adjustment, all of said parts being disposed with relation to each other, substantially as and for the purpose described.
