Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
T. W. TERRY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND GEO. W. HOFF, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY WATCH-POCKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,645, dated August 28, 1866.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, T. W. TERRY, of the city and county of Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented a new and Improved Vateh-Protector; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear. and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specitication, in Which- Figure 1 represents a front elevation of this invention, showing its application tothe watchpocket of a vest. Fig'. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Y
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invent-ion consists in the arrangement of a plate provided with a hinged yoke or staple, and constructed so that it can be conveniently secured in the interior of a watch-pocket, near its top, in such a manner that when the guard of the watch is placed between the plate and staple and the chain fastened to the button-hole, as usual, said plate and staple prevent the watch being withdrawn in the ordinary manner; but by turning the staple back the watch can be drawn out ot' the pocket, Without, however, disengaging the chain from the staple, thus allowing the proprietor of said watch to see what time it is, while at the same time unauthorized persons are prevented from abstracting the watch fraudulently.
A represents a plate, made of metal or any other suitable rigid material, and provided with a bulge or cavity, a, from the edge of which rise two small lugs, b, which form the bearings for the gudgeons of the staple c.
The plate a is connected to the bed-plate B by means of a hinge, d, and from said bedplate rises a button, e, which serves to lock the two plates together. This arral'igement enables me to secure my protector in the desired place with ease and facility by clamping .the material to which it is to be fastened between the two plates, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings; but I will here remark that the protector may be secured in its place in various different Ways, and I do uot- Wish to confine myself in this respect to the precise arrangement shown in the drawings.
When the protector is secured in the proper place, near the top of the watch-pocket and on the inside thereof, the wat-eh is inserted, turning the staple c down over the guard of the watch, as shown in Fig. l, and drawing the chain through the staple to the buttonhole. It is obvious that the watch thus secured cannot be withdrawn from the pocket by pulling on the chain; but if the proprietor wishes to see what time it is, all he or she has to do is to turn back the staple and take out the watch, pulling the chain through the staple.
By this arrangement the watch is protected against pickpockets without inconvenience to the person wearing the same.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the plates A B, hinged staple c, and button e, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose described.
The above speeication of my invention signed by me this 14th day of March, 1866.
l T. W. TERRY. Witnesses:
GEO. W. HOFFMAN, H. P. GRoss.
