MILITARY CAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,294, dated February 2, 1897. Application filed November 19, 1896. Serial N0.612,689. (N0 modelil T0 (LZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HENRY \VALLNER and JOSEPH ALLNER, citizens of the Empire of Austria-Hungary, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Military Caps, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in caps, especially military caps worn by army and navyofficers, conductors, police officers, firemen, &c., in whichan ear-protec tor is arranged in connection with the body of the cap in such a manner that it can be placed over the ears whenever desired or stored away in the body of the cap out of sight when not required for use.
In the accompanying drawings,Figures l and 2 represent side elevations of our improved military cap, showing the ear-protector respectively as folded away in the body of the cap an d as placed in position over the ears. Fig. 3 is an underside view of the cap, S]10\ ing the spring-actuated sweat-band moved away from the rear part of the cap so as to permit the outward folding of the ear-protector, and Figs. l and 5 are respectively a vertical longitudinal section on line 4 4, Fig. 3, and a vertical transverse section on line 5 5, Fig. 3, of our improvedniilitary cap, showing the ear-protector folded into the same and the elastic chin-strap likewise stored away in the $311116.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of a military cap, such as is worn by military officers, conductors, firemen, police officers, &c. The body of the cap is cylindrical in shape and provided with a straight vizor extending forward from the body. To the inside of the body Ais applied a sweat-band B, which is attached to the body at its smaller front portion, while its rear portion is not attached to the body of the cap, but provided with two or more fiat band-springs I), preferably of thin whalebone or similar elastic but non-corrosive material, by which the rear portion of the sweat-band is always held in position in the body of the cap, except when moved in forward direction,.as shown in Fig. 8. To the lower edge of the rear part of the body Ais attached an ear-protector (J, that is folded into the body of the cap and held in position by the'spring'actnated rear portion of the sweat-band B. The ear-protector Cis preferably made of cloth of the same color as the body of the cap and provided at its lower front corners with two sections, forming an attached elastic chin-strap D, having a suitable fastening d at the ends when it is desired to hold the ear-protector in position over the ears, as shown in Fig. 2. The elastic chin'strap can be stored away in the body of the cap by placing its sections in loops 6, arranged, preferably, in the front part of the cap, so as to be out of the way of the ear-protector stored in the rear part of the cap.
For ordinary use the ear -protector C is stored away in the rear portion of the cap and held in position by the spring-actuated rear portion of the sweat-band, which presses evenly over the same. In cold or stormy weather when it is desired to protect the cars,
the spring-actuated rear portion of the sweatband is moved toward the front portion to clear the ear-protector C, so that the latter can be movedin downward direction over the ears and the rear part of the head, in which position it is retained by connecting the ends of the sections of the chin-strap, so that the ears are fully protected against cold or moisture.
By our improved cap persons in official positions who have to wear military caps for denoting their position or rank can readily protect their ears against cold or storm whenever required by simply placing the ear-protector over the ears, while at other times, when the earprotector is not required, the same is stored away in the cap without disclosing its presence, as it is firmly held in position in the cap-body by the spring-actuated sweat-band.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A cap provided with an ear-protector attached to the rear of the cap-body and adapted to fold therein, a sweat-band secured to In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our invention we hax e signed our names in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
