B. F. FORD.
SGISSGRSOR SHEARS. No. 576,050. Patented Jan. 26,1897..-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN F. FORD, OF NEIV CASTLE, MAINE.
SCISSORS OR SHEARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,050, dated January 26, 1897.
Application filed August Z0, 1896. Serial No. 603,383. (No model.)
Castle, in the county of Lincoln and State of View of the same when open.
Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scissors or Shears; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to scissors and shears, and more particularly a combination-shear, having certain parts to perform various functions, which will be described.
The tool is primarily designed tobe used in carpet-laying and paper-hanging, but the domestic utility thereof will be apparent.
I will iirst describe my invention with the aid of the accompanying drawings, and will then define the matter for which I desire Letters Patent.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the shears closed, and Fig. 2 is a side obverse Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view showing the adjustable rivet. y
In all of the views the same numeral indi- Cates the same part.
1 is the heavier blade of the shears, having the bow 2 with the mortise-shoulder 3, the stop-lug 4, the end 5 so formed as to present an L-square having the sides 6 and 7, a notch in the side 6 to be used for raising or pulling nails or tacks, a notch in the side 7 for the same purpose, and an inch rule or scale 8 delineated or engraved upon the inner face mid- Way of the blade 1. The other blade 10 of the shears is pivoted to the blade 1 at 11 by a rivet having a projecting portion forming the punch or brad awl 13. The blade 10 also has. the bow 14 with the hammer portion 15 and the projecting screw driver 16. The mortise-shoulder 17 of the blade 10 is adapted to impinge the lug 4, stopping the opening movement of the blades at a point where their cutting edges are at right angles with each other and form a try-square.
The ends of both blades 1 and 10 are provided with points 18 to be used as compasspoints, the spread of said blades being controlled by the rivet 12.
The rivet which holds the two blades together is screw-threaded at one end, and the awl at the other end forms a shoulder with a cylindrical portion intermediate said ends. In assembling the parts said rivet is passed through the aperture in one of the blades and engages with the screw-threaded aperture of the other blade, so that said blades can be readily operated. Then the tool is used as a pair of dividers, the rivet is tightened, so that the shoulder Will engage with one of the blades and press it against the other, so as to increase the frictional contact and hold the blades in any position to which they may be adjusted.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- In a combination-tool, the combination With the blades having the notched and pointed ends, the bows, the screw-driver and hammerhead formed integral with one of said bows,
Vand said blades formed with mortised shoulders, of the rivet for holding said blades together screw-threaded at one end and the other end provided with an awl formed with a shoulder and a cylindrical portion intermediate said ends, and said screw-threaded end passing through one of said blades and engaging with a screw-threaded aperture in the other blade, the combination being such that when said blades are opened to their farthest extent the cutting edges thereof Will be at right angles to each other forming a square, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN F. FORD. \Vitnesses:
