Description

(No Model.) P. S.1VIALOOLM. TOOTH POWDER REGEPTAGLE.
Patented Jan. 19, 1897.
Inven nor.
I W itnesses.
Attorney.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILIP S. MALCOLM, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
TOOTH-POWDER RECEPTACLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 575,610,.dated January. 19, 1897.
Application filed July 23, 1896.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PHILIP S. MALCOLM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portland, in the county of Multnornah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tooth-Powder Receptacles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of receptacle with openings b and 01 registering. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of upper portion of receptacle with openings b and cl registering. Fig. 3 is a similar View with openings 1) and d registering. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of neck of receptacle through groove Fig. 5 is a perspective View of plug 0.
This invention is designed to provide a receptacle or closure of improved character, and which is more particularly designed as a holder for tooth or toilet powders; and the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the body of the receptacle or closure, which is preferably in the form of a cylindrical can, the top portion A of which may or may not be removable. Rising from the top of the can is a hollow cylinder neck B, which communicates with the interior of the can by means of an opening I). The area of this opening is equal to about onehalf the diameter of the neck. In the side of the neck-is also an opening I).
0 design ates a cylindrical hollow plug which fits within the neck B in a rotatable manner. This plug has a flanged head 0 and a laterally-projecting pin 0, which engages an outwardly-ofiset groove 0' in the neck. One end of said groove has a vertical extension 0 by means of which the plug can be inserted or removed from the neck when said pin is brought into proper alinement. I may, however, use any suitable means for holding the plug in the cylinder and for limiting the rotation of the plug. Formed in one side of Serial No. 600,268. (No model.)
the plug is an opening d, which is of the same size as the opening I), and at its inner end is an opening d, which is of substantially the same size as the opening b. The opening dis at the opposite side-from the opening at 01, so that when the plug is turned to bring its opening d into register with the opening I) the opening 61 is not in alinement with the opening b, but the latter is closed by the plug; and, reversely, when the openings I) dare in registering position the openings 1) d are out of register. In either position it will be seen that the air is excluded from reaching the interior of the receptacle.
To use, the plug 0 is first turned to bring the openings 19 d into register, the can is inverted, and the chamber of the plug fills with powder. The plug is then turned to cause the openings b d to register and the powder is poured out onto the brush.
The can may be filled by removing the plug 0 or by removing the entire top, if the top is made removable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described holder for toilet powders and the like, comprising a receptacle capable of being inverted, and having a hollow cylindrical neck portion which communicates with the interior of the can through an opening at one side of the bottom wall of said neck portion, said portion having also a side opening, and an internal outwardly-offset groove extending partially around its circumference and terminating at one end in a vertical extension, and a hollow plug rotatably seated in said neck portion, said plug having a projection which engages the said groove, a flanged outer end, and also side and bottom openings, said openings being adapted to register respectively with the side and bottom openings of the said neck portions, but so disposed with relation thereto that when the side openings are in registering positions the bottom openings are in non-registering positions, and reversely, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PHILIP S. MALCOLM.
