(Cl. 222367) This invention relates to improved means that have been devised for use in combination with containers such as cartons or canisters adapted to hold quantities of powder and like discrete materials, for the purpose of delivering from such containers measured quantities of the said materials as and when required.
The invention may be given efiect to by a manner of constructing the container itself, or by means of an attachment which may be placed on the open end of a container to form a lid therefor and thus may be changed from containerto container for the delivery of the contents thereof. 1
The invention in its general features provides for the provision of a closure for the end of the container which closure also forms the inside of a space formed between it and a cover plate or end and the peripheral edge of which space is made with a discharge opening therein. The said closure is made with an aperture opening through it and positioned at a point away from the discharge opening. 7 A valve forming plate is fitted to engage and rotate upon the outer surface of the said closure and such valve plate is provided with means whereby it may be thus rotated. This plate is formed with an aperture in it which is adapted by the turning of the plate to be brought into coincidence with the aperture in the closure, or to be brought over a solid part of the closure. Also it is provided on its outer surface with a measuring chamber attachment so made as to enclose the said aperture in the p ate and to open sideways at the periphery of the plate and by the appropriate turning of the plate, to register with the discharge opening in the side of the said end space.
The turning of the valve plate to cause the measuring chamber to register with the aperture in the closure will permit of such chamber being filled by gravity from the container body. Then by a further turning action ofsuch plate, to shut 01f such connection and to bring its open side into register with the discharge opening so that the quantity of material thus separated and measured off may be emptied out through such opening.
In fully describing the invention, reference will be made to the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which:
Figure l is an elevation of a container fitted with the invention as embodied in a removable attachment.
Figure 2 is a sectional elevation thereof.

Figure 4 is a similar view but showing the inner closure in plan.
Figure 5 is a sectional elevation of the invention as embodied in the containers construction.
Referring first to Figures 1 to 4, A is the container body the upper end of which is open and the usual lid of which is replaceable by the attachment.
Such attachment is formed as a deep rimmed lid B suitably made to rest upon the open top of V the container. The lid B is provided with an inner or false, top C in which an aperture D is formed and which inner top is disposed at a distance beneath'the lid top to provide a space 'E between them. This inner top forms also the closure for the container top. The rim of the lid B is made with an aperture F in its side, opening from the bottom of the space E.
A valve plate G is fitted to overlie the closure C and to cover the area thereof. This plate is so mounted that it may be turned round upon such closure and, for turning it, a handle H is provided to extend radially out from its edge and to pass through .a horizontal slo-t H formed in the rim of the lid B. This slot is made of such a length as to restrict the amount of'turning movement to certain limits hereinafter set out. The valve plate also is made with an aperture J which is so positioned that when the plate is turned to one end of its limit of movement, the aperture therein will register or coincide with the aperture D of the inner top. Arranged above this aperture J of the valve plate, is a measuring chamber M which fits within the space E and is disposed radially on the plate. The bottom of this chamber is open to the said aperture and generally coincides with it in area while its outer end is open and engages the inside of the rim of the lid B so as to be closed thereby but to be opened when the valve plate is turned to bring such end opposite the aperture F of the rim. This is designed to occur when the valve plate is turned to the other limit of its movement. The said extent of turning movement of the valve plate is regulated so that at a point in between its limits, the open bottom of the chamber M is over a blank portion of the inner lid or closure C.
Thus with this device in position upon a container, the valve plate may be turned to the first mentioned limit of its movement and the container then reversed when material will fall from the body and fill the measuring chamber. This may then be confined in the chamber and the container aperture F closed, by turning the valve plate to a medial position. The container may then be again reversed to its original position and the valve plate turned to the other limit of its movement to bring the mouth of the chamber into register with the opening D and the measured quantity of material in the chamber emptied out through such opening. This measuring off and emptying, however, may be obtained while the container is kept reversed.
In the manner of carrying out the invention shown in Figure 5 wherein these features of construction are embodied in the construction of the container itself, they may be combined in its bottom to permit of the container being filled and lidded at its top in the usual way. In this case the bottom of the container forms the outer covering for the space E and the inner, or false, end C is fixed inside the container body at the required distance from its end. In all other respects the construction and working are the same as described in relation to the other manner of carrying out the invention.
In the details of construction of these means in each instance shown, it is preferred that the inner or false end C should be made of the conical form illustrated in the drawings and for the valve plate G being correspondingly shaped to fit over such end. This will ensure of the valve plate being maintained in its proper position and also will provide for a central turning axis being formed by depressing the points of the cones as at c to fit one into the other and by forming the top of the lid 22, or the container end at its centre with an inwardly projecting ring as at B 4 one end of said container, said closure having a discharge aperture positioned between the center and periphery thereof, a peripheral wall projecting beyond said closure as a continuation of the walls of said container and having an opening therein, an outer closure member spaced from the inner closure member and cooperating with the inner closure member and said peripheral wall to form a space, a valve plate disposed upon said inner closure member and rotatable relative thereto, said valve plate having a discharge aperture positioned to register with the aperture in ac inner closure member when the valve plate is rotated to one extreme position, a hood mounted on said valve plate over said aperture therein and forming a measuring chamber, said hood extending into engagement with the inner surface of said peripheral wall and having a discharge opening adapted to register with the opening in the peripheral wall when said valve plate is rotated to its other extreme position, and means carried by said valve plate and projecting through a slot in the peripheral wall. to rotate said plate, said extreme positions of said valve plate being sufiiciently remote to enable boththe aperture in the valve plate to be closed and the opening in the hood closed when the valve plate is in an intermediate position.
